gateway keyboard messes up

Got a newish cheap gateway with windows 8. Every once in a while all the keys become shortcuts for random crap. A closes a program, d opens a tab, some things do nothing at all. No keys actually type anything. Restarting fixes it
next time it happens ill try to get a better list of what does what
thought maybe i was accidently turning something on hitting a random button?
haven't been able to find the problem thru googling
