I'm doing updates on the laptop and during the install process a box popped up that said Microsoft Office 2010 Starter For English Update is available and I am wondering if it is malware. As I have never had an update from Microsoft pop up like that, I cancelled it. Also, we don't even have any version of Microsoft Office installed. I was online but didn't have a browser open.

I've tried googling for the answer without success.

A lot of manufactured machines came with 2010 starter which includes word and excel in a limited fashion, you can't launch Winword.exe or excel.exe but you can open both types of files. If you have a "q:" drive then you have this free edition from Microsoft.

You can always check windows update manually by launching or from the control panel and see if an update is there to verify it is from Microsoft, and try to get used to recognizing the difference between windows updates and other updates. It really clear which ones are windows, even compared to the malware that tries to mimic.

Again, I never had an update from Microsoft, whether it be a Windows update or other Microsoft software update, in a pop up box. They have always come through the control panel.

As this is the wife's laptop, I was worried she had done something the last time she used it.

I guess I will click on okay the next time it pops up as there doesn't seem to be a way to permanently ignore it and further research elsewhere seems to indicate it is legit.
