My wifes Facebook was hacked and got shut down. She called and was told that it was through a gambling website, I guess our firewall was down or expired so they wont reopen it. Any one have this problem and any advice?

If it were me, I'd be asking what "through a gambling site" means. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, nor does "I guess our firewall was down or expired so they wont reopen it".

Numbnutlow,

Many of the claims in your post do not make sense without more details.

Your post suggests that she called Facebook. I did not know that Facebook offers phone support, but maybe if it is a business account, that is possible.

You should consider explaining the situation in more detail. I suggest stopping and re-reading what you write before you publish it, so that someone who doesn't know your background/details/etc. can follow it.

This just raises more questions. How did you find the hacker's phone number?

Numbnutlow,

That sounds like a total train wreck. I hope that you are able to somehow mitigate the damage.

They sent it to use disguised as facebook.....they had us going until they asked my wife to buy firewall software from Wallmart for 1,100 bucks lol. She hung up on them and we started changing passwords and set up new security. We got back into her Facebook, but we still are not sure if we are in the clear. Will take the computer in to see what we can do or what they can find.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, a thread title change would be in order since the FB account actually wasn't hacked through a gambling web site - do I have that right?

Edit to add: Actually, I'll start by moving this to CTH as I think you have a better chance of getting help there. I'll let Josem decide if there should be a title change, to avoid confusion for others.

Numbnutlow,

You should:

a) consider getting expert local advice, in person, from someone you trust
b) consider every account on that computer compromised and untrustworthy until you do (a)

How did this turn out? Activate 2FA, use an authenticator instead of SMS verification, and be wary of emails that might be phishing. I can imagine that this was all very stressful while it was happening.
