How do you partition an SSD so you can boot in LINUX or Windows at your option?

Options for Running Windows and Linux on Same System Including Dual Booting

A VM would be a viable alternative.

Sounds pretty good.

What is a "VM"?

virtual machine, so you could run a program like virtual box (which is free and excellent) and boot another OS inside of your running OS

dual booting was probably more of a necessity back when there were not dual- to quad-core CPUs and low available system memory. Now that most folks are on 2-4 CPU cores and 8+ gb of RAM, you can pretty easily run at least 1 VM on a standard computer.

My gaming rig has no problem running a host OS, and 3 additional VMs all at the same time. Rarely something I need to do, but it's nice to have the option.

You know what's super fun? Setting up a dual boot system with two partitions and both OS's using "full" half disc encryption. No, you don't know that because no, it's not super fun.

I already run virtual Windows XP because I have legacy programs that require it. So are you saying that same thing could be done to creat a virtual LINUX (Ubuntu?) thereby dispensing with partitioning the "hard drive" (in my case, a SSD)?

Yes you can run Linux virtual machines. Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, Fedora, any distro you like.

Before had a dual boot but nowadays run virtualbox on windows. You could run VMware workstation as well. especially if you are trying some thing out.

Just had a microserver so need to get cpu so I can run kvm on it. it is pushing limits but why not.

think the kvm as your OS where u can run several operating systems on It would be like win10 with several windows, each having an operating system (kvm is Linux but just an example).
