HDD died so i replaced it and reinstalled windows7 which has fully updated to SP1 and anything else associated.
(not factory restore, but from OEM disk as directed by dell forum>
windows installed and validated without issue been running fine for a week as i updated and reconfigured for my bother in law>
finished this am. shut down the machine and packed it up..took it to brother in laws>
Set up and started, at login screen mouse was working fine until i click on a user account. Machine freezes
Have learned machine is not frozen, mouse and keyboard just stop working>
hard restart, safe mode, same issue.

After trying a different mouse with same result a brought the machine back to my house and set it back up , same issue. remains

BUT i also had installed teamviewer on it so i am able to access it remotely(without issue) from my machine.
Device manager shows under Other Devices
! (yellow exclamation point) Dell USB Entry Keyboard
! (yellow exclamation point) USB mouse
Under properties it say driver is is not installed and updating it yields nothing found. Driver search on dell/support...nothing>
a few days ago the support site indicated a BIOS update and chipset driver update which i did, the machine/mouse/keyboard worked fine for days after that.
If i remove the devices they reappear with the same error after restart.

It appears the BIOS is the latest as shown on the dell website, also there is no other version do downgrade the BIOS if that is the issue:

I cannot understand what is happening here any ideas on how to proceed?

I had a similar issue with a laptop running WIN 10 at the office.

After much research I discovered it was one of the newest Windows updates Microsoft had just released that was causing the problem. Uninstalled that specific update and was good to go.

Like you I could not believe that the most basic input devices there are were rendered useless by the OS itself. No driver update would solve the problem.

Somewhere on the web you will find the update # that you need to roll back/uninstall. I suggest starting on the Windows forums on Microsoft site.

Thanks for the response, I did come across references to the issue affecting W10 and specific KB causing it, but nothing, zero in regards to W7.
All i can find is that it specifically affects W10 and that W7 machines are not affected. I will though post at the MS site and see what they can offer !

Do you have another set of ports you can try for the devices? That may retrigger device enumeration and pull a driver. It's also worth trying a different mouse and keyboard if available to try to rule out failing hardware.

You can also try opening an administrative command prompt window and run sfc /scannow . This triggers a check of the system files integrity and will take 15-60 minutes to complete. If it encounters corrupted files it will pull down a clean replacement copy which will be put in use on reboot.

Can you grab the driver filenames from the driver tab in device manager, then select driver details. I think I recall fixing a USB issue on my machine by restoring a copy of a driver file from the C:\Windows\WinSxS folder to the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder.

If you're still not working at that point, we can deep dive with USBView. You'll need to download the Win7 SDK and install to get this tool, but it's a free download.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...bugger/usbview
This gives some advanced diagnostics of your USB topology. Let me know on this thread if you reach the point where we need to dive into USB view.

Thanks very much for your attention:
there are 6 different USB ports all result in the same thing.(4 on back 2 on top of the machine)
if noting is plugged in device manager does not show anything, if i plug either device in to any port it appears quickly in device manager under "other" with he same yellow exclamation point>

I tired several different USB Mice and two keyboards, windows brought up a dialogue indicting it is installing drivers the first time i plugged each on in but then indicates it was not installed, failed>
i i try again it just shows in device manager as described above, no longer attempts to install a driver

sfc/scannow from an administrative command prompt results in
"Windows resource protection did no find any integrity violations"

in device manager if i open properties and driver tab( for either device) it says this:
Driver provider: Unknown
Driver Date Not Available
Driver Version Not Available
Digital Signer Not digitally signed

If i click on the driver details button a dialog opens that says:
No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device.

So it seems finding the driver in WinSxS isnt possible>

I am going to download the winSDK and install it on the machine.

Edit i downloaded the sdk installer but i can get it to run/open seems windows doesn't recognize the file...
going to try the .iso
Thanks again !

Try searching both Win32 and WinSxS for HIDUSB.SYS. When found, backup the copy in Win32 to a different location and replace it with one from WinSxS.

To try and narrow it down to being an HID (Human Interface Device) driver issue, can you try plugging a USB storage device into a couple of the ports and see if you see the expected drive show up.

Not to harp on it, but it is a Windows issue. Something changed that is conflicting with this type of HID. Again, mine was W10 but it was the same thing. Those devices work on other PC's, but other HID devices will not work on this machine. It's not the USB ports or controller.
Good luck - ask around as you indicated on MS forums.

I have hidden files shown.

@3mdk5,
Are you working with OP on their physical system, or basing this on your issue with the same symptoms on a different hardware and OS platform? This may end up being tied to a KB, but we need to walk through ruling things out and finding out exactly where in the USB stack the issue is arising. I don't see any comments from OP that other USB device types are working, so we need to determine if other device types are working or if all USB functionality is currently broken.

@UbinTook
The built in File Explorer search function should find the files if you search the c:\ or C:\windows folders.

These steps are worth a try, uninstall the USB root devices and let them redetect/reinstall after reboot.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...4-4de2c66880f6

If that doesn't work, this is worth a try.

All the usb ports have no issue recognizing external drives, a wifi adapter, and several android devices. The issue is just the mouse/keyboard.
I am accessing the affected machine remotely( its sitting right next to me) form my W7 Machine.
ill take a look at those links and and post back

Thanks for confirming that other devices are working as expected.
The filepaths in the SuperUser thread should be useful here.
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\*hid*.sys is where they should be.
There should be a copy of the files here:
"Copy the file from C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository (they will be in sub-directories under this structure)"

If they're not in either location, you can extract them from the install.wim on your OEM restore disk (a bit complicated) or if both of your systems are 64 bit (or both are 32 bit) you can copy the HID drivers listed on the SuperUser link from your other PC and add them to your desktop C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ .

Uninstalling all USB root devices seemed to work as i was able to use the keyboard and mouse to chose a user and tyope in the password for that account, after the desktop appeared windows started reinstalling and as soon it it failed with the mouse driver, the mouse stopped working>

On the affected system...
All these drivers referenced in the superuser link are present:
  • hidclass.sys
  • hidparse.sys
  • hidusb.sys
  • kbdhid.sys
  • hidbth.sys
  • hidir.sys
  • mouhid.sys
  • hidbatt.sys
  • VMBusHID.sys

Both system, are 64bit, MY system is W7 Professional the affected system is W7 Home premium.

  • do i understand correctly that i can copy those files on my system and drop (over write) them in the corresponding location on the affected system?

If the files are present and sfc didn't report corruption, they are probably OK.

I think I may have seen a similar issue before. In device manager, check if the USB root hub drivers are from Intel or from Microsoft. If this is what I think it is, the MS driver is present and works, but the Intel driver has a higher driver rating as an IHV provided driver (not exposed to the user) and gets pushed over the top when you log in. If this is the case, we may need to force your USB root devices to use the MS driver and/or remove the Intel driver. Click update driver, then browse my computer for driver software, then let me pick. We may have to point it at a specific driver file if it doesn't offer you a choice between and Intel and an MS driver. If it keeps reinstalling the Intel driver when you reboot or install updates, we'd need to move or delete the Intel driver file, but if it plays nice after you fix it I'd leave it alone.

Out of curiosity i plugged the mouse into my system to see what would happen..windows recognized it and installed the driver with no issue:
Here is what device manager on my system showed:

Same with keyboard: Installed fine when i plugged it in:

On the affected machine the device manager shows two Intel entries and their drivers are Intel branded.
everything else listed has MS drivers:

So you'll probably need to swap out the drivers on the 2 Intel EHCI entries for the MS supplied USBEHCI.SYS driver (or if I'm wrong and these are USB 3.0 controllers, USBXHCI.SYS)

Ok, so...how do i accomplish that?
When i right click/ update Driver this is what i see as compatible:
Simple as just choosing the "Standard" controller?

Yep, that should be the one. If this works, the chipset driver update package would be the probable root cause for this. That pushes drivers for several motherboard components, including the USB controllers.

Since changing thosse drivers didnt work

What are your thoughts at this point...
I posted the images showing the drivers on the working machine up a few posts...is there a way to find those online and install them on the affected machine? I can seem to locate them

would it be better to just do a fresh install of Windows?
