So what's up with TrueCrypt now? I've been using it for several years ever since I came across this thread, but I don't know enough about computers to know what I should do in response to the news that it's no longer secure or whatever?

Who are you trying to protect your stuff from? There hasn't been any information on live hacks in the wild that can get through TrueCrypt so if you're just concerned about hackers or your sister there isn't much to worry about.

Not sure if this required its own thread but I was recently infected with a virus, had my Pokerstars account password stolen and all my money lost. Stars security basically said "It was your fault so you're SOL." What I want to know is how did they do it? Was it a key logger? Remote access to my computer? Scanning my pokerstars software to get my password (I had "remember password" on)? What other software should I be worried about?

Stars security said that my account was accessed from a computer from Russia and they said it was likely a key logger. However, I never typed in my password since I always used the "remember password" function. Admittedly it was a very weak password but they said that the person logged in with no wrong attempts so they knew exactly what it was. I have no other poker software on my comp now, but I had full tilt installed and also used "remember password" with that. And even after uninstalling and reinstalling it still saves your preferences so I'm assuming my password is still saved on my computer. Should I be worried about that?

I already changed my gmail password from a different computer and it doesn't look like that was broken into and since the virus, I haven't logged into anything on this computer except for 2+2 now. I also ran the following virus scans:

windows defender
avast 2x
super anti spyware 2x
ccleaner 2x
malwarebytes anti-malware 2x
avg 2x (2x means i ran it twice)

With Avast, I ran it once, it found nothing suspicious, then the 2nd time I ran it, it found something called "UBS.Bicololo" so I'm assuming that was the virus. No other scans found anything. Should I be worried that a virus might still be on my computer and not log into anything sensitive?

I realized that this thread is pretty dead so I reposted the above in its own thread.

The information is valid for any flavour of Windows, but it is too early for anything specifically related to Win 10, imo.

How applicable is the OP today? Just Google each of those items and read up?

The theory is probably still sound but all of the links and applications are 7 years old and should be verified to still be useful.

Harden Windows 10 - A Security Guide

Malware and hackers attack by exploiting security vulnerabilities. The solution is to reduce attack surface so that we expose less opportunities for exploitation. The main principle is Least Privilege. To implement the principle of least privilege is to configure your system so that it only does what you normally do, and nothing else. This minimizes the attack surface, and removes services that listen on the network 24/7 to anybody who wants to send it stuff.(like an exploit) There are many places in Windows where risk outweighs features, and this hardening guide goes through them one by one. Also, we will implement several layers of security that stops various forms of attack, and also protect your personal files.

Harden Windows 7

Read the instructions very carefully and note that many services may and will stop working.

Additionally i have installed the following three extensions to every browser that i use: UBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere and Privacy Badger. Note that things may get a bit slower in return for more secure browsing!
