computer monitor help (flashes of green)

I am trying to revive an old monitor before I set it out for trash pickup. It is a nice monitor but a few years old. HP, 1600p extreme HD, 2560x1600 resolution. I connected it to my tower using HDMI and I don't think it worked, no picture. Then I switched to DVI where I am having some success and using the monitor as I make this post. However, I am not confident in it because it will, at times, start showing flashes of green. In fact, it started malfunctioning a little bit ago and I changed the resolution setting to the highest(which I wasn't using) and now it is currently perfect.
I wish I could give more details of the malfunction but it's about what I said. Green waves, in no real pattern, will flash across the screen. I will give one example: let's say I open a new Chrome window(could be any application, not just chrome), sometimes when the green waves come it will "kind of" fit to the new open window. So, let's say my monitor is about 16 to 17 inches tall(i know to get the size you go diagonally). Let's say I open the chrome window but the chrome window is about 12 inches tall and not nearly as wide or tall as the monitor itself. If I position the window in the middle of the monitor, the green lines will extend horizontally with the window, see below.
so the light green would be indicative of the open window(the open window does turn green as well but lighter in color). Things in the open window can be seen and read but obviously, it is really annoying and ugly. From the open window, as stated, the darker green will extend from the window, only horizontally. This is one example, sometimes the green flashes and waves are more prevalent and less pattern like. I have done some googling but can't find a problem quite like mine but I will continue to look. What do you guys think is causing this? To note, it has to be the monitor, my smaller monitor has been running perfectly on the same tower for years now.
