Can someone please give me some info./tips/advice on how I can clone my Hard drive. I currently have a 120GB Samsung SSD (840Pro, probably 7yrs. old). When I got it I thought I'd never come close to using 120gb. 7yrs. later it's ~3/4 full and has crashed a couple times now.

I've got a new 500GB 860 EVO that I'd like to use in it's place.

How can I do this? (somebody mentioned to me to use Macrium Reflect 'free').

Help is much appreciated. tia

the general wisdom has been that it's better to start fresh on the new drive rather than clone and bring over any issues and inefficiencies that may exist on your current drive. that said, i have cloned my drives recently, because i didn't feel like dealing with the reinstalling and reconfiguration. but i try to keep my computer very lean and clean to begin with, so ymmv. with a 7-year old drive, i'm guessing that you might do well to start fresh.

but to answer your question:

samsung has their own data migration software. i didnt have any problem with it the 2 or 3 times i've used it over the years. https://semiconductor.samsung.com/co...support/tools/

before that, i used to use clonezilla (free open source), but i have no idea if that is considered ancient now.

Thanks. I'm going to check the health of my SSD with that tool prior to cloning it.

My computer use is pretty basic... hopefully the drive is okay (I don't want to do a fresh install and then download everything all over again).

Once I complete my computer I've got my wife's to do next. All but one of her drives are Samsung (4 SSD's, 3 HD's) and she has certainly fk'd her's up (filled them to capacity). Lots of stuff I need to save off of her's (computer used for photography).... thinking it's going to become a part-time job for me

.
I checked out the health of my SSD and Samsung Magician said it was good. Then ran a check for errors... none.

Ran the Data Migration software and it was extremely easy & FAST!!! It was done in less than 5mins.

I disconnected my former SSD (128 GB 840 Pro) & then fired up the computer, praying it would work! It took a bit longer but then sure enough, my desktop appeared the same as always!! Yes!!!!
I clicked on TaskMgr. to check things out and right away I discovered I had unplugged the wrong SSD (FFS!!!! lol). Now I wasn't as convinced it had worked, lol. Shut it down, plugged the new SSD back in, unplugged the old one & tried it again. It booted up faster than it usually does! .. And everything was there just as it had been before! Soooooo happy about it.

Now it's onto my next task - - working on my wife's computer.

Well done - everyone I've seen try to clone their hard disk seems to report that it is much easier than they expected.

Yah it went better than expected for sure! Today my computer feels like it's running much smoother & faster. The new SSD is writing at speeds 2x faster than my old one.
