But who will backup the backups? But who will backup the backups?

Currently have a network drive for backing up desktops + doing double duty as a media server. Given the extra work the drive does serving up videos, I want to make sure that should the drive fail, all my stuff will be safe.

To that end, I got an external drive to which I backed up ALL the things.

Everything is fine and great, right? Well, not exactly.

We do routinely add new things to the networked drive. I would love to have a way to run a script or program that would grab any new files, folders, or possibly updates to files and shove those onto the external drive on demand.

Is there a good solution for this that already exists? Some way of only adding newly added or modified files and folders? Or should I just copy/paste everything and wait for the OS to ask if I want to skip duplicates?

allway sync is what I used to use when my externals still functioned. It isn't free if you use it often for a lot of data but it should do what you want (and they do have a free trial version to test it) and wasn't very expensive IIRC. It can be a bit of a resource hog when it is working and it often didn't release all the ram it used after large backups so I would usually have to restart it after big backups.

Given how many externals I had fail or quit connecting to my pc/network I quit using them and just use googledrive for my most important data and dont worry about the other stuff like media, etc.

Isn't the rule of thumb 3-2-1
3 places
2 mediums
1 offsite

I use Dropbox for stuff I have access to, it's on all my computers and in the cloud. Any modern back up software should be able to save diffs to the cloud of any drive on your network.

This. Very much this.

And if I'm understanding OP's requirements correctly, have a look at products like Macrium Reflect.

So long as it can handle network drives that looks like it should work. Will have to give it a try later, thanks!

And thanks to everyone for the replies!

Update

Very weird install process for their free version. Also, does not appear able to access network drives. :-/

Gonna look into maybe a python or BASH script next I think.
