Can you give any more details about the bsod? like the error code?

Also, have you considered returning it to Amazon / manufacturer as faulty?

Does Germany not have any consumer laws that say goods have to be fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. they should work for a reasonable period of time after purchase)? I'd be surprised if you could only return a faulty product if you had insurance.

That said, no longer being near Germany might be more of an issue. As might whatever you've done with the machine since purchase.

If you don't take a photo start by writing down the error code. It's the bit that says something like STOP ERROR 0x0000008C.

I used to have some random bsod due to faulty ram on my then new PC: it worked well for several days then suddenly bsod for no apparent reasons. Try the memory diagnostic tool integrated to Windows. In Win7, go to Start menu and type "Memory" in the search box then select "Windows Memory Diagnostic" when it appears. Not sure how to launch it in Win8.

Regarding your performance problem, maybe your laptop is working in energy saving mode instead of high performance mode? Some laptop are set up to go to energy saving mode when they're not on socket but it is possible to alter these settings manually.

Does it just crash at random? Or is it only when you're doing certain things?

Start with a full scan with Malwarebytes.

Ensure that all your windows updates are installed, and check to ensure you have the latest display drivers. The first usually takes care of the second, but I'd check the manufacturer's website just to be certain (stick in "Lenovo [model number] drivers" in to google.)

You shouldn't need to reinstall the OS under most situations, but if the issue persists, go to start-> type "cmd" and right click the command prompt-> run as administrator -> type "sfc /scannow". That will let you know if you have any missing or corrupt windows files causing your issue.

Windows version? Probably 8 or 8.1. Make sure all drivers are current. You should get a bug check number with your BSOD crash on the display. Could be helpful to know what it is. Also look for file called memory.dmp in one of the windows folders. It is a crash dump file that has relevant crash info. I think Microsoft will give some feedback on it. Not sure about that though.

I get BSOD like 1 in 10 times when i use file explorer. I'll be browsing docs, pics or videos and bam! Its done it for the past year or so. I'm using windows 8. Also used to happen pretty much any time i used chrome so i stopped using that but its kinda hard to stop using file explorer.

If anyone has any advice on how to fix, would be appreciated.

As with the OP, we need more details.... Like the error code that is displayed in the Blue Screen (Something like 0X0000003D Interrupt Exception not handled) - this is displayed at the top of the BSOD.

Aye, if you have BSOD issues, get http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html and open a new thread.

It's most likely caused by a software you downloaded or a driver you upgraded since it is a new laptop. However, if it is down to a hardware then you can return the laptop under warranty.

I would advise running WhoCrashed to analyse the logs and get started with uninstall, removing or fixing the bit that caused the issue.

Here's a good guide to get started -> Blue Screen

Best of luck!!

Still gonna need the details of the error to help you.

The software that Wellju posted will give details of the bsod's you have had in the past - install that and let us know what the errors are.

It won't be due to the time... these logs are kept until deleted. Most likely that you are not storing log files when a bsod occurs.
To enable logging; (win 7)
Go into start menu, right click computer and select properties.
Then click Advanced System Settings (on the left)
In the box that pops up, select the Advanced tab, then under start up and recovery, click on Settings.
Under system failure, ensure Write Debugging information has either small or kernel memory dump selected.
Click OK to all open boxes.

Next time you get a BSOD, it will store the error.... let us know what it is.

I downloaded the software recommended and it says the cause is ntoskrnl.exe so i googled it but i don't understand anything i read. If someone could take a look and try and make sense of it, it would be appreciated.

Okay. The stop error is 3b. I'm not able to give you a complete answer but others might.

If not, you might want to ask for help through the Microsoft community forums. They can be pretty good for this kind of thing.

In the meantime take a look at this thread, which describes a similar (but not necessarily identical) problem. You might well start working through some of the suggestions in the first post by SpiritX, which are of more general application. There are other useful links in his post too.

One other note: in Win 7 and Windows Server 2008 this stop error indicated a known problem in Windows relating to the use of FireWire devices and was curable using a Microsoft Hotfix. Do NOT attempt to solve your problem using that route (unless told to by someone who knows what they're doing) as it does not appear to apply to Windows 8.

Has a strong, weird scent of gpu driver. My taste buds might have been a bit affected, but update your gpu driver nervertheless, qaarama.

I don't think it's the GPU because the display drivers run in user mode and shouln't crash the whole system. If the display driver crashes, the screen will instead turn black, the driver will reload and you should be good to go again.

Have you checked the notebook manufacturers website for newer Windows 8.x drivers? like chipset drivers, disk controller drivers, network adapter drivers....

Try looking up the error code 3b. It IS the GPU drivers.
