I have a gmail email account I set up in Outlook as an IMAP account. I need to make sure to back this up on my local computer so I can have access to these emails if anything were to happen. If these emails get deleted from the gmail server, I'll need to be able to recover them.
The typical way to export from outlook won't work as these emails aren't actually on my local computer. They are on the gmail server and outlook simply accesses those emails. Right now, if these emails (or this account) were to be deleted from the gmail servers, I would no longer have access to them in Outlook.
I'm assuming the above is correct. If I'm correct, then I will need to back these emails up locally in order to be able to recover them later.
I'm using Outlook 365 on a desktop running Windows 10 Home.
I should make it more clear. My email account is setup through the gmail servers, but it does not have a gmail domain (doesn't end with @gmail.com). I can't access this account from logging into gmail. I set it up in Outlook using the following settings:
Account Type: IMAP
Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
Can I still backup all the emails in this account if I can't log into gmail to access them?
Just create a separate .pst file to use as an archive or backup or whatever and drag the emails (or copy them) from your Gmail inbox into that. Then you will have a local copy and can do what you like.
That's what I'd do in Outlook 2016. Not sure if you can create a local folder in Outlook 365. If you can't, then perhaps you could just use a local mail client to access the Gmail account (does Thunderbird still exist, etc?) and do it that way.
