Okay so lately, my laptop dell xps 15 9550 which is a 5 year old laptop is lagging a lot. I notice that in background processes when i go to task manager, there is tons of programs there.

I am using Windows 10 Pro.

Is there a way to remove processes that you do not need? My laptop is extremely laggy.

Specs of my laptop are

i5-6300hq
32gb ram
1tb nvme ssd

I see a ton of background processes like

These are screenshots I took of task manager once i restarted my laptop few days ago. This is when i had nothing opened... note even chrome. As you can see, there are tons of processes and many runtime broker and postsql and many other things.

Does anyone see any issue with any of the processes in these pictures? For some reason, the pictures doesn't seem to show up full size and big. I had uploaded these pictures to imgur since it doesn't seem i could upload the pictures directly from my computer to it.

So curious if anyone know if any of these processes could be the reason why my computer feels a lot slower than back then. Thanks.

all looks perfectly normal Pauly

what exactly is laggy ?

describe what you are doing/trying to do when you notice the lag ?

you sure it isnt an online task that is lagging due to a poor Broadband connection ?

Well sometimes opening chrome tabs is a bit laggy compared to a while back. But main issue is when playing poker on the computer. As you may have heard, stars has aurora and it is very hard to play a good amount of tables without lag. Example I tested 10 tables and the lag was very bad. You cannot click on buttons or have to reclick twice or many times. But many times you time out because of this. When playing on 888/party together... with hem3 running, there are tons of issues where the client freezes and or crashes. But people had mentioned hem3 is very cpu intensive but shouldn't my old computer still handle it? Basically when i have like 8+ tables, I notice the lag is so bad to the point where im folding hands at tables and can't even do anything about it. And i use programs like 888caption/partycaption to help with that.

I'm sure you have heard how bad the party software is. Basically mouse disappears many times especially when you have many tables up and you cannot even click on anything until it reappears. Basically when im playing, I have to use my keyboard hotkeys to fold/call/raise etc quickly... otherwise i would time out. And many times i cannot even see the fold/call/raise buttons on the table because if i wait too long, well i get folded. I have heard few people with this issue, was even a thread on this but majority of people never even address the issue. I even uninstalled and reinstalled party as well... same issues. I find this very unlikely other players on party has this issue because I cannot imagine even like 1% of players could tolerate the lag im seeing on party.

Before I use to play on 888/party with hem2... and there were issues. But its no where as bad as with hem3. Now 888 last year i believe changed their software where it crashes and freezes a lot. Lot of players have complained about it etc. But now even stars has these issues with aurora.

The thing that has me confused is I see many players on stars/party who play many tables. Obviously you can't check to see how many tables they are currently playing on... but its certainly at least 8+ tables. For example on stars, i check lobbies and i see lot of players who have to be playing at least 18+ tables minimum when I was counting how many tables they are on manually. I'm shocked at how these players are playing on aurora with the lag unless they have the top of the top line computer available? But someone mention they had a ryzen laptop and had issues with stars and party.

Again back then before aurora and the new 888 software, I remember I could play a good amount of tables with almost zero lag with HEM2. But again this was a while back before the new software by stars and 888. So I wanted to know, if there was anything in my background/windows processes that could possibly be causing this. Also recently when I was playing on stars/party, I got this blue screen message of your pc has run into a problem and need to restart. This was either the first or second time i seen this message ever and this was when my stars/party and hem2 client was all lagging. So I thought those programs had to be the culprut?

My internet is spotty at times. But I connect to my phone's data and tether. Its same issue. Also if it matters, I never ever updated my Bios. But that should not have any effect? I never did it because I didn't know about that... but also I heard you could risk screwing up your laptop with this. I also do any windows updates when prompted but I didn't update things like java and many other programs for a long time though. But those programs like runtime broker and many things that repeat itself... that isn't any issue?

I did the windows defender full scan... took 3 hours and no threats.

Here is the other thing. When I closed all my chrome tabs... previously it showed me using like 800mb total in chrome in task manager... after I close it and my other programs and have nothing open... i noticed memory was still at 30%. This is after closing all my chrome tabs and everything. What I also notice was the calculator i had opened... it was showing 65mb ... which is ridiculous. When i tried to open calculator few times, I noticed it took a long time and lagged to open each calculator.

Then after I closed every program, I noticed

Antimalware Service Executable using over 100mb.

Desktop windows manager using over 60mb

Windows Explorer using over 30mb

Previously I had noticed all these 3 processes... many times they use even higher mb. So could these 3 processes be possible reason for the lag? Also I had noticed everytime i open Openoffice, it never opens correctly. Always an error and it does this each time so it takes a long time to open 2 openoffice documents. I always have these 2 openoffice documents opened whenever i turn on the laptop. I had noticed when i tried to close these openoffice documents... almost always it shows not responding to one of them...then eventually it closes.

So these things have to be the reason for the lagging?

Also I noticed when i had tons of chrome tabs open... I closed all of them except 1 chrome tab. And that chrome tab was just a web page that doesn't do much. So i figure the chrome mb usage should drop from 800mb all the way down to very little. Instead it was still very high like 800mb. So is there some issue with chrome as well?

Okay so I think I might find what is a possible reason for the lagging. I check online and it seems like if you have icons in your desktop that doesn't show a picture... like imagine a broken icon... this could cause it to lag and you need to delete these icons off your desktop. Anyone know if this is true?

On my desktop, I have these icons which looks either broken or looks a bit strange and have no idea what it is.

Blackchippoker Icon without image
Crash.checkpoint blank file
Desktop
CLogFile

I deleted that bcp icon off my desktop.

The crash.checkpoint file... I must had that file in my on desktop for a long time. When I click on, it ask me

How do you want to open this file

Look for an app in the microsoft store

More apps

Check mark always use this app to open .checkpoint files... so only thing i could click on is on look for an app in the microsoft store.

What is this file?

Icon called desktop...When I click on it, it opens desktop-notepad

[ShellClassinfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21799

I have another file exactly like this in my downloads where the last number shows 21798.

What do I do with this?

And finally I have this file called CLogFile in my desktop where when I open it

It shows this in a notepad file

Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Read Thread Before ReadFile handle 208
Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Start Read Thread
Date Time Start Read Thread ReadFile handle 210

There is literally like a thousand plus of these lines. So do I delete this? What is this CLogFile? I checked online and the only thing I find is its related to 888poker? So I should not delete this?

Yes - the way is what I suggested in your other thread:

have you ever cleaned that bad boy?
open it up, dust off the fans, get yourself a pressured air can like this one https://www.amazon.com/Falcon-Compre...63&sr=8-4&th=1
open up the copper heatsink above the cpu and gpu (few small screws), clean off the old thermal paste, which has most likely hardened by now and replace with a pea sized dot of new paste https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-MX-5-C...69&sr=8-8&th=1

is your ram operating in dual channel mode? check in hwmonitor https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html zip one is portable, you don't have to install anything

if physically cleaning doesn't solve it, most likely it's some software that's messing up, if you can't narrow it down the culprit, a fresh W10 install is going to do it. backup everything you need and follow this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYYo...l=JayzTwoCents

now party will still run like **** prob cause party, but stars should run fine, the xps is equipped with some sort of dedicated gpu, like a gtx 960m and that would suffice for aurora, people are running stars with worse

Josem, that is to restore or refresh. I thought you meant like not allow processes running etc.

ionutd... I never myself cleaned this laptop. But few years ago when i went to a repair shop, I remember the guy did. But in the last year or so, somehow my laptop... mainly the keyboard part of it... surrounding areas... but not the screen is very dirty/sticky. I have zero idea how the stickyness happen since i basically leave it a desk.

Well what you mentioned, would you suggest having a repair shop do that instead? Again, i do not want to open the laptop myself. A while back I did this to put in a new laptop battery, there were tons of issues with it and it took a while to fix it. But any computer repair shop can clean the dust/stickyness out of it easily? Again its mainly the outer part of it. When I opened my laptop last time to replace battery, I didn't see much dirt or dust etc.

Ram I have is crucial 32gb 2400mhz. I am close to 100% these issues im having has nothing to do with the physical condition of it. There is some software/program etc that is making this happen. Again many times programs like antimalware service executable and windows explorer would suddenly go up very high cpu%. A while back when I did a windows defender full scan... basically cpu usage is literally 100% the entire time and you can't even web browse or anything like that when this occurs. But that issue doesn't seem to happen that much anymore. I googled antimalware service executable and windows explorer high cpu and lot of people seem to have these issues. Also HEM3 crashes like almost everytime when on party/888. It didn't had this much issue with HEM2. But again lot of people seem to have issues with HEM3.

Yea a fresh windows 10 install probably would fix it. But again that is the last resort as I don't want to delete anything on my computer. Because last time I had cloned my old ssd into the new one. Party software is the worst of them all. Stars was fine back then without aurora. With aurora its pretty bad. But of course no where as bad as party. But if you look at the 888 thread tons of people are now complaining about the software. But would you say my laptop is still good for use today though? 5 year dell xps 15 9550 laptop with i5-6300hq processor and 32gb ram and 1 tb nvme ssd.

Yes, I think that particular laptop should do for many years to come, a few poker clients + hem is really not that demanding. the 6300hq is still a competent chip.

it's actually very easy to open up most laptops and clean / replace paste. normally it should be done once or twice a year, but once every 2-3y works for lazy people when they notice the fans don't spin anymore or make helicopter take off noises,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLXa...nnel=How-FixIT

now when you clean the fans, take a pressure air can to every nook of those fan housings, don't just superficially brush it a few times like that guy is doing in the video. also don't need to spread thermal paste with a spatula, just a pea sized dot in the center

if you don't have any small, precision screwdrivers, there are kits readily available, should be 10$ or so for the cheapo ones. don't be afraid, it's a 15 min job, a monkey can unscrew a bunch of small screws, clean some stuff and put them back. there's no know how involved, can't really damage anything either. sooner or later it will have to get done if you plan to use the laptop for longer

Meh...
It depends on the model. Older laptops can be a ****ing PITA, because you have to dig through several layers of protective plastic frames, before you arrive to the CPU.
