Yes, they dropped HT for most i7 that generation. I think it was a combination of creating market differentiation to squeeze an i9 SKU into the 115x socket lineup and speculative execution vulnerability mitigations for hyper-threading. i7 9700 looks to be the bang/buck sweet spot with that setup.

If you want to go nutso on CPU cores, maybe take a look at what you could piece a first gen ThreadRipper system together for. Jumping up to 16 or 32 cores would definitely boost render speed.

How large are your video projects? Is that 500GB SSD large enough?

Oh yes, that drive is plenty big enough, my videos are all for web (max 1080p is fine) and "authentic" videos of me just speaking to camera for between (mostly) 2 and 30 minutes.

I'm increasingly meh on used workstations for most uses. That thing is a beast, but it launched in 2012. Getting Win10 (and really anything past Win7) to install properly on the Z420's (smaller cousin to the Z620) bastard onboard controller was a pain when we had lots of those at work. If you need a semi-disposable render box/solver box it can work, but its big, loud and will be picky about parts. Building a beefier main machine is better for most people most of the time.

@Josem Would you consider selling your Intel proc/board and RAM and replacing with Ryzen? That jumps you from a Cinebench15 multicore score of 1500 with the 9700, to 3160. Your current i3 8350k scores 684 on the same benchmark, as a point of reference.

Total cost for proposed overhaul below is 788 GBP minus whatever you can sell your existing CPU/board/ram combo for. Board plus cpu on US ebay seems to run around $200-250ish(USD) so with RAM $300ish isn't out of the question.

^ it's true, the 3900x is such a good value chip for this sort of workloads and decent quality boards are not that expensive either.

Josem, I'm guessing you are running 3 x 8gig sticks, dual channel only works on even number channels and Ryzen really likes this feature, a lot more than Intel does. if you got a 16 and a 8, get yourself a 2nd 16gig stick, same model number or matching freq and timings and all, as far as I'm aware, high freq doesn't improve performance much, at least it didn't on my 2700x, as long as it's 2666Mhz+, lower and there's a noticeable dip in cpu performance.

if you don't still have the cooler brackets for AM4 in a box somewhere or the cooling unit itself doesn't come with a multi-platform bracket, you'l have to get an adapter, can usually can screw it on top of the LGA1151 one.

actually 3900x comes with the same blower the 3700x has and I guess it does the job (barely), tho it's loud and the chip won't clock as high at it would with a proper tower or water cooler, the one you already have is likely better.

so ye, if you're willing to sell and switch platforms, I believe you're getting better value this way. used Intel chips still go for a pretty penny, even if you have to sell the whole system and build a new one, it might be worth it.

Have any of you purchased monitor arms recently? I'm getting a new sit/stand ergo desk for work from home and it feels like the right time to move my monitors to arms. I'm probably going to be using 2x27" 16:9 and a 34" 21:9, but I have a third 27" I can get in the mix if there's space and it feels useful or cool. Desk will be 30"x60". I want to buy something quality but not drop the $1k that the monitor mount I had in office at my last job would cost (that thing was sweet, though).

VIVO has a pretty decent bang for buck ratio. Not sure if they make one that meets your exact specs, but might be worth checking out. I recall seeing one of their quad models that supports 17 - 32" monitors.

I bought a single pneumatic for my 34" earlier this year for about $80 that is holding up well.

I have ~10 year old monitor arms which are all hard (not height flexible) and have just paid ~£20 for a single extra Amazon monitor arm.

Ergo desk and chair arrived today. Shopping for a monitor arm/s, cable management goodies and a standing mat. I suspect I'm always going to have a bit of a rat's nest of cables because I'm trying to cram so much into one desk space but I can get it looking much better than this.

Just off camera is a chonky Schiit Vidar power amp. The Elacs sounded pretty good being driven by an old AV receiver, but they love power and moving to a standalone amp opened up the sound. I decided awhile back that I spend more time listening to my office setup than my home theater setup, so that's where I should put the money/effort.

Keyboard is a CMStorm I've had for quite awhile now. The spacebar is going a bit wonky and I've had to steal a few keycaps from another keyboard, but I still like it a lot. Not sure what I'll get if the spacebar or something else fully gives up.

sounds like one of the stabilizers might be broken or loosened up. you can fix it by propping it up. either jam a little smth on one side, piece of toothpick if it's outright broken or smth softer if it's just loose like cardboard or sponge/foam.

if you got some silicone grease around the house, try to get a bit on the end of the stab wire, I'l put a video below. careful it's not conductive cause the pcb is right under and there's a chance it shorts with the metal rod in the stab.

Debating on doing a build thread. I started with an HP Z230 as a donor carcass as a cheap way to get an ECC supporting platform. Going to recase into a Fractal Node 804 and use the 8x4TB drives I've accumulated over the past few years (considered just going with 2x16TB drives mirrored, but the drive cost alone is more than I have in this NAS so far).

I have an X1 Carbon 4th gen and wanting to get a 43" 4k TV to expand. This laptop has a mini displayport and an hdmi 2.0 with a 2560x1440 max res. and 16gb ram. I have selected a few tvs but wanted to know your opinion before purchasing. 1. Samsung UE43TU8002KXXH, 2. Samsung UE43RU7102KXXH and a couple on Sony that are in the link below.

2560 x 1440 is 2k, not 4k

when you say 4th gen, that's the laptop model's generation, not the cpu's right? i.e. do you have something like an i5-6200u ?

either way, hdmi output is likely 1.4, not 2 and that's not capable of 4k 60Hz. display port will do that, but I've yet to see a 4k tv with display port connectivity

regardless, when shopping for a 4k tv to use as a monitor, you need it to feature something called 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, otherwise small text will be fuzzy. when you start using it with your pc, go to tv's menu, put it on pc mode and disable all "smart" image enhancements, like dynamic contrast, noise reduction, all those bells and whistles.

4k tv will not work at 4k 60hz on your Thinkpad because it lacks hdmi 2.0 support. you're only going to get 30hz which is an awful experience, avoid like the plague.
