They're basically the same processor. Both are Skylake-X processors (Intel HEDT can be a funky place). Your 9940x has a slightly higher base clock. Speccy might be tripped up on CPU codes somehow, not expecting 2 gens of Skylake-X based SKUs.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

what was the point of x series chips?
no ECC support, same instruction set
are they at least cheaper than Xeons?

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

This was the main option for getting more than 4 cores and decent clocks/overclockability from Intel at the time. You also get 4 channels on the memory controller for double bandwidth vs socket 11xx chips. Last but not least, you get up to 44 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU for multiple GPUs, greater than gigabit ethernet, SAS controllers, more than 1 PCIe/NVME drive with full bandwidth. These are the parts that Threadripper was made to compete with.

k so more pcie lanes than xeons essentially
what do you do with a bunch of gpus, machine learning?
but mby mining rigs would cut it for cheaper?

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

HEDT is largely targeted at gamers with big budgets and semi-pro/prosumer type workstations.

It has the same PCIe counts as the Xeon E5s but usually higher clocks and overclocking support as well as generally lower MSRP for near equivalent parts.

Xeon covers a ton of market spaces, at this point, with very different capabilities and features.

Xeon E3 is a desktop CPU with a few workstationy features, mostly ECC support. Xeon E5 is 1-2 socket and usually on the same generation as HEDT (high end desktop). Xeon E7 covers 4-8 socket and churns slower than the E5 and below parts. These can get really funky in feature set and ludicrous in pricing. Xeon D is cool but expensive embedded chip in the 4-16 core fairly low power range.

All that is the old system, too, Intel took a relatively sane segmentation naming and threw it out the window for Xeon Scalable with metal names, Xeon E to replace Xeon E, etc.

I though TR was made to compete with workstation Xeons and X series was a bit of a failed experiment and really poor value. Do system integrators commonly use X chips?

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

To the best of my knowledge, AMD considers ThreadRipper a success to this point. It's an HEDT platform to compete with Intel socket 2011 i9/i7 processors as well as workstation Xeon > 4 cores (Ryzen Pro competes with Xeon E3). It's found a market in the video editing and content creation space.
ThreadRipper was always going to be a niche product. Until Ryzen 3xxx, it was the only non-server AMD option for more than 8 cores and still offers SKUs with more cores than Ryzen. It offers more memory bandwidth and capacity than Ryzen as well. It also offers even more PCIe lanes than Intel HEDT.
TR is currently still on Zen2 so it looks less than great vs Ryzen and Epyc Zen 3 parts. Rumor mill projects Zen 3 TR but we'll have to wait and see with limited chip availability through most of the year to this point. Ryzen sells more volume and Epyc sells for more margin and in higher volumes.

TR Pro is its own beast, largely. It's basically Epyc with higher clocks and TDPs and has twice the memory bandwidth of TR. My initial thought was that they should have called this Epyc Workstation, but I read that the ThreadRipper brand had made good inroads in video/content production markets, so TR Pro name makes sense.

HEDT is a niche market. Most people don't need the feature set it provides. A fair part of it's market is nerds with money buying more power than they need. That said, there are also people who do really need the CPU power and platform features that HEDT provides. If you're doing hobby/small business video production or 3d modeling these platforms can be the best option and far more cost effective than OEM Xeon workstations purchased new. It's also fine for people to buy them as a hobby piece within their means. People don't "need" tuned and turboed daily driver cars, but if they enjoy them and have the means there's nothing particularly wrong with it. Same with hot rod HEDT systems with NVME RAID and multi-GPU.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

oh ye sure, to each their own
wasn't questioning the validity of high end desktops
just had a suspicion that X series were a bit of a fail all around
don't think I've ever played with one

have you seen what Intel's doing now with 12th gen? performance cores with hyperthreading and power saving cores, like on smartphone chips... and still on 10nm

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

am running i9-9940x CPU with Geforce 2080super GPU

If i were to upgrade to w/e the best intel cpu + top gpu how much better would the poker grind be?

am running 2 virtual machines, about 20 clients with like 100 tables open, and then windows client phone apps and emulators on top. once i start opening up the PPPoker/Upoker windows client and then the emulators the system gets a bit choppy/laggy. Think its more to do with the GPU tbh but not 100% sure on that.

don't really care about solvers/running sims. just for playing poker.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

oO 100 tables
welp you already got 28 threads, not going to get any better there out of Intel
how much ram?
mby a 2nd pc, hooked up to one of your monitors (guessing you run 3+) to offload some of the work to
but the lag should have smth to do with the emulators, mby you can configure them to use less resources and try again

Windows 11 is going to come with Android app integration built in. I wonder if at some point stuff like pppoker will be supported.

Ram is 64gb and yea running 3 monitors...but i think grinding the way you suggested would be tilting af.

AMD has better cpu for this type of thing?

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

what free software do you guys use to clone a disk to smaller SSD?

I used to use EaseUs, but the clone option is no longer in the free version

next time you grind , you have everything open and it starts lagging, take a screenshot of the Task Manager

ctrl+alt+delete , task manager, performance tab

also take a screenshot on idle, when you're not doing anything

I figured it out myself. First you need to resize the bigger disk, I used Minitool Partition Wizard for that.

After that I tried Clonezilla with some advanced options and it threw an error. Then I tried DiskGenius to clone, but the cloned disk wouldn't start up. Third attempt was Aomei backup and that one worked like a charm.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

BigBanana,

most likely it's the emulators that work like ****, I mean look at that gpu utilization rate
that's not what's causing the lag directly but the emulators are def involved somehow
I'm afraid there's not much you can do besides trying out some different emulator settings, mby try looking for a solution on reddit or youtube or post on their forums
several people have complained here of lag when running emulators, some had beastie systems

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Its worth checking if the emulators support tagging different instances to different GPUs. SLI no longer makes sense for gaming, but if you can split the load adding a second GPU here for some of the emulators might make sense. GPU market is getting a bit better, but is still pretty effed for the time being.
