Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

I ordered parts for a new Ryzen 5800x build and to take my home office network to 10Gb ethernet. Parts for new build should land Friday

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

lately ive been very busy with getting moved in with my gf. she isnt a gamer at all but enjoys her app games on phone and computer. before we were together, a "treat" to herself was an hp all in one, 4gb ram, celeron etc. somehow she said others were too slow to run the games.... its functional, but really slows down after 5-6 tabs just browsing..

i have my desktop upstairs, a laptop that she HATES, and hers in the living room. to avoid having to carry hers up and down as much (not hard, just annoying) i decided to just buy her another of some sort that we can "share" in the living room. first thought was a refurb imac, but all the sales seem very fishy... started browsing just normal all in ones and came across a lenovo idea centre, only like $600 + touch screen! ok im sold...

dig a little deeper, start looking through the models they offer.... end up with a 10700t, 16gb ram, 512 ssd, 27" not quite 4k touch screen, apparently the base, the actual computer, is also a wireless charging station?!?!? basically snap buy..... for a little more than double, oops....

it seems kinda cool, and hopefully will be a nice second comp to use when shes not, but personally i would never even consider getting one vs a normal pc.. but i guess i'll see how much i end up liking it.

and earlier in the day...

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

welp, you know, no.1 problem with all in ones is how proprietary everything is, anything goes and you're pretty much done with it. like ye, HP or Dell are going to keep making parts for that sku for another 2-3-5 years hopefully, but they'll charge you a significant premium too, they're not dumb. even sh they're overpriced. otherwise, they can be great deals in the short run.

even in big name pre-built desktops, esp small form factors, the psu is proprietary, sometimes not even ATX, board is their own weird shape and nothing else fits, gpus are vbios locked to work only on their own machines, sometimes even ram and ssd options are locked in bios. another problem is they buy cpus and gpus super oem style and stick their own cooling solutions on and they cheap out like there's no tomorrow , this coupled with their cases sucking and so they either limit their hardware in bios so it doesn't overheat or they just leave it like that to throttle, either way you don't get what you paid for cause it can only run on max as intended for a couple mins and then clocks down.

if only they had builds with off the shelf parts, didn't lock stuff in bios and just used their economy of scale to offer you a slightly better deal on configurations that made some sense, everyone's happy. ye they can cheap out on boards with no overcloking support since most ppl don't even bother, mby they give you a shitty cheap case and ram w/o heat spreaders, w/e I could live with that.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

well fairly close call... when trying to set it up, she was getting so mad she almost took her old one back out instead... num lock wasnt on yet for some system stuff and was just trolling her so hard, then shed finally let me help and i 1 shot it and she gets more upset....

but we made it, got it going and didnt take long at all to become a fan. i have no desire to poke my computer screen but oh well

yeah im not too concerned about it i guess... sort of a one-off purchase that i highly doubt will be a staple in my computing future. if it doesnt last long, thatll be that. if it breaks easily, same thing. if it lasts, i dont have to worry lol

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Might need it's own thread but...

My windows explorer (Taskbar etc) Seems kinda buggy. For example, If I click the calculator it will be like 20 seconds before I can actually use it because it just hangs.

Sometimes the actual taskbar itself just seems unresponsive at times and it will hang quite a bit, Sometimes I may even have to restart windows explorer.

It's manageable but if possible I would like a fix anyone know anything to try?

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

I've experienced this before, possibly caused by a recent W10 update, mby the fact that you removed one of the apps or disabled a service and then the update screwed things over

can try and re install and re register all the built in apps
right click on the start icon (bottom left)
open powershell in admin mode

the command is

Get-AppxPackage -allusers | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "$($_.InstallLocation)appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}

mby try a registry clean after that with Ccleaner and a system restart

if that doesn't work, idk, fresh install always fixes everything
Windows just was never that rock stable unfortunately

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

try to reset the windows store
open the run console (win key + R)
type and run
WSReset.exe
restart pc

you can also try to fix corrupt files

open powershell in admin mode again
sfc /scannow
let it run

if that still doesn't do it,
again in the powershell
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

if none of these do the job, it's possibly smth to do with your Microsoft account
might need to register another one or idk, fresh W10 install...
if it gets to it, I recommend you don't link your Microsoft account when you set up Windows again, nor should you let it sync settings on your devices and stuff, just do an offline install, then turn wifi back on or plug the ethernet cable, run updates, then download and install the chipset/gpu drivers

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Thanks man!

I've done a bunch of things most of the stuff you have suggested above. It feels to be a bit more responsive now. I guess only time will tell now.

I still get the same outcome when running that long command but other than that everything seems completely fine fingers crossed it stays that way!

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

A friend of my son was complaining about how bad his new gaming computer ran. So I asked the specs and he sent me the specs from the Amazon dealer, where it was bought. Ryzen 2200GE with 16GB RAM.

That should play Fortnite decently so I asked him to bring it to me. I expected it would be badly configured. Well, it wasn't bad. it was worse than than.

Firstly it was a normal Ryzen 2200g, no GE. But that really doesn't matter.
It had a HD, not an SSD. LOL. That is sooooo 10 years ago. Furthermore, the 16GB RAM was just 2400MHz and it was a single stick. That's the worst memory configuration possible for those Ryzen APU who need dual channel badly and the faster, the better.

Finally the PSU was 80W !! I didn't even know these existed. What a piece of crap. The MoBo had a 8-pin connector, but they powered it through just a 4-pin connector. I was surprised that was even possible. I assume that the other 4 pins are for powering the PCIE slot, which obviously isn't in use.

I took out the HD, put in an SSD of 480GB, replaced the 1x16GB with 2x8GB Crucial 2666MHz and overclocked it to 3200MHz, which it did without problems. I charged 60€ (and kept the old parts).

Now the PC runs as it should and it will play Fortnite at about 2.5 times the previous speed.

I am just upset at how disgraceful people can be selling junk like that. They probably paid like 300-400€ for that piece of ****

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Sounds like a sketchy prebuilt. The 4 pin +12v is the only thing that might be ok. IIRC the APUs are all specced at 65w or less. The motherboard could probably take a 95/105w non-APU Ryzen, so having the 8 pin plug makes sense, but 4 pin should be able to supply more than enough current for that CPU.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

My R9 290 can be undervolted from the factory 1.25V to 1.1V. That is massive. I also have applied Grizzly Conductonaut as thermal solution (aka liquid metal). 5 minutes MSI Kombuster was 66C at factory settings and undervolted to 1.1V it was ...... 65C

WTF. I expected more of that

it might not actually stick if you go -150mV?
check with hw info

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Modern drivers throttle GPUs on "power virus" workloads. They also tend to have fan tunings/power tunings to run at a target temperature and adjust other GPU parameters (clocks, fans and voltages) to hit that temperature. Try looping 3dmark with both voltages for a couple hours each logging the temps, fan speeds and clockspeeds.

this

I haven't tested extensively, but he voltage goes up to 1.18 according to hwinfo64, when I have capped it with Radeon Adrenalin software at 1.1V

The GPU doesn't listen to the software settings, it seems

So how do I undervolt now ?

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Today I bought an Asus ROG Strix GTX1070TI and, as usual, I ran it through the Furmark 1920x1080 benchmark and it scored about 96 FPS.

This surprises me, because I have had several GTX1070 already and they scored a little better, around 99-103 FPS.

The GTX1080 I had scored 123 FPS, I was expecting the GTX1070TI to be somewhere in the middle @ 110 FPS or so.

Any explanation for this? Just a bad draw in the silicon department? It ran the test on the PC of the seller which had 32GB RAM and an I7-8700, so that should not bottleneck this test at all. Temps were fine as well, so it seemed. No temp throttling.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Run some other benchmarks and check voltages and temps. Perf should be close to 1080 stock vs stock. If the card is throttling you might want to redo the thermal paste and pads.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

The GPU price madness seems to have passed its high. I am able to get some cards for more reasonable prices on the SH market.

I'm not sure about other markets, but in Spain the best bang for the buck on SH market is to go for GTX 1070/1080. All RTX are gloriously overpriced, as well as GTX 1060, RX 580/590 and especially GTX 1660. The GTX 1080 wipes the floor with a GTX 1660, but I can get them at approximately the same prices.

I'm seeing GTX 1050TI at ridiculous prices, sometimes over 200€. No idea why you would want to buy such a weak GPU at such prices

I found GTX 1080 for 320-350€ and a GTX 1070TI for 280€. Now that's value for money.

Re: All the cool kids (NC thread 0.0.2a)

Yeah, I hope the news of mining GPUs being dumped for sale in Taiwan from mainland China mean we're heading back to reasonable prices soon.
1080/1070TI are still pretty solid GPUs but getting up there a bit in age. I'd have to look at the 16xx benchmarks to see if there's anything suitably decent there for more than 1080p.
I want a 3080/3080TI/3090, but we'll see when I get a chance to grab one at a price I can accept.
