thanks everyone. yes my gmail is 2fa, only trusted devices are mine and my phone. def gonna be changing to random pws, the ones i use now aren't terrible, but not excellent.

it will be mostly crypto, with some stock options on the side, so 100% uptime/instant accessibility is ideal. im pretty sure im just being nervous, but again, cant afford to be wrong lol..

ye it's a good idea in this day and age to be educated in this sort of stuff, some steps are quite easy to implement. you don't have to go full Edward Snowden

The practical goal for security these days should be to make it more costly/time intensive to break in than the contents are worth, since you can basically rent as much compute as you want to run hashcat and crack passwords.

**** Windows

Yesterday I found out by accident that Windows was only using 3 of the 6 cores of the Ryzen 1600AF.
It appears to be a setting in msconfig that typically should not be limited, but was configured at =6, so that Windows could only run 6 threads = 3 cores.

Windows decided, on its own, to use 50% of my CPU capacity. It is not a setting I have ever touched or even knew about (until yesterday)

Not.

When I unclicked the "6" and left it blank, suddenly the cores 4-6 re appeared in my Cinebench, Prime95 and HWInfo64 (HWinfo64 reported 6-core CPU, but only had stats on 3).

Also my son confirmed that the PC was doing a LOT better. It has been working with one hand on the back for several weeks and we did't even know it

There are settings in Windows to limit the number of cores exposed to the OS as well as to limit the amount of RAM that can be used.

These aren't on by default and there are reasonable reasons why the settings are present. Some software runs best or only runs at all with a limited number of cores and or RAM. The settings are useful for testing software during development on a range of configs without needing as many physical devices.

The market for sh GPUs is utterly terrible atm

6m ago I could buy RX 580 for 100-ish. I actually got mine at 90€. Now they are being offered for 150-250 and its little brothers the RX 480/570/470 are not found below 100€. Crap like the 1050Ti, which is a lot slower tha the RX 580, doesn't sell for below 100€. How am I suppose to build PCs with this ****?

I am tempted to buy a GTX 780TI for 120€. It has the same performance as the RX580 or GTX 1060, but is a 250W card that appears to be able to heat your living room

that's a 3gig card, medium textures max on any modern pretty game

I think that the heating efficiency of your PC is in the range of 99%, it'd be a legitimately good thing if people replaced home heaters with PCs running distributed computing products.

Here's the story from Sweden about trying a different form of this a few years ago: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/2...and-heat-homes

its actually a very cool idea and probably one of the future. for instance, elon already sort of joked of the idea of having your solar roof mine crypto with the excess power rather than send it back to the grid. if you could monetize your energy, it might offset the added expense of replacing components more often than you might a full heating unit.

or if power companies offered incentivized programs; we'll install this comp in each room and you'll run xx software to help us in return. i would assume it would take a LOT of power to offset what comes from a full heater tho, but its cool to think about

This week I bought a Gigabyte GeForce 210 GPU.
Totally silent graphics card. Only thing I have to decide yet is what crypto I will be mining with it

In 4 months I've built 7 PC's for fun & profit and sold all of them (most of them pretty simple builds with Ryzen APU). Currently components are on the way for 3 more. I wonder if it would be a good idea to build a solver PC and put it on the marketplace here

prob not, keep on making gaming pcs

do you hunt for older used gpus to keep price down?

gonna send a pm also, but!

before they get thrown away, i have several old lga 775/ddr2 systems that i will take apart and offer for shipping from PA. zero guarantee on anything, but im pretty sure its something like 4x2gb sticks (maybe a couple 512mb in there too), a possibly fried 9800gt (i think) several hdds 256gb/512/1tb i think, maybe a 120gb ssd as well. cpus are an e8500 c2d/and maybe an e6400 or so? all old comps that have been in the basement. if interested, lmk asap. if not, garbage.

probably not worth it to box, but a sunbeam core contact cpu fan.

Kind of. I'm keeping clear of GTX 1050TI, 1650, 1060, 1660 and RX 580/570, because they are being offered way too expensive. The cards I got pretty cheaply were and R9 290 and an RX 470. The GTX 970 can also be found at decent prices.

The R9 290 throttled in 30 seconds in Furmark lol. Over 90ºC. I had to replace its thermal paste (probably about 8y old) and now it only goes up to 83ºC in one minute. It appears this card can function at 90-95ºC. Really nice in winter time.

I had a 390 and it ran stupidly hot as well
but AMD were ok with 90-95c I think for these
RX 470 still a nice underestimated card, goes for 150 eur where I live tho, meh
mining specific cards I see pretty cheap, you know the ones that don't have any video out ports
there's a trick to get them to output through the mobo's HDMI if you have an Intel chip with an igpu

I got the RX 470 off a miner for 70€. That was a steal. All his other cards were taken. I had to flash the original bios back, but it swam easily through Furmark at 57 FPS or so.

The R9 290 did 73 FPS in Furmark. That's only 6 below my RX 580. I'll make sure to put it into a big case with a bunch of RGB ventilators to cool it off. RGB is to gamers as **** is to flies.

I see a GTX 1060 3GB for sale without video outputs. 150€ lol gtfo

who knows how long til prices normalize
now with the 3rd Corona wave kicking in, I'm guessing it'll be a good 6 months
at least low tier cards are only mildly impacted, I had to get a new HDMI 2.0 capable card and 1030's retail for ~75 eur, that's usually what they went for. RX 550 on the other hand used to retail for 60 eur for the 2gig 64bit, now even those are impossible to find new under 100 and used they're 80+

prototype Intel gpu that never saw the light of day
Linus Tech Tips had a video of it
idk if that listing is real seeing as Linus got his from a contractor who was clearing out Intel\s place and found a couple in the dumpster if I recall and that pair were the only ones in existence as far as he figured. it's basically a museum piece

edit: and apparently there's a russian collector with one

Dammit, I bought an R9 290 GPU, replaced thermal paste and it worked fine... for exactly two days. Now, after starting up the PC I have video for less than a minute, I get weird stuff on my screen and then blackness.

Anyone has experience in resurrection of graphics cards? I obviously read about baking video cards and reballing, but whether these have any real value ... (reballing is out of scope since it requires a load of materials and equipment of which I have nothing).
