I have no non-public information on this. I imagine seven figures of USD (more than $1m, less than $10m). What do y'all think?

Did they buy the whole publishing company or just the site/forums? I'm a bit surprised there's not a post I've seen on the main webpage. While the change is somewhat concerning, it makes sense from a life perspective for Mason and David to sell off 2+2. I hope the new overlords maintain the good and reinvigorate where they can.

Out of scope for this forum, I suppose, but are they looking at doing more sports betting content now that several US states have legal books? I don't really have the time or interest for sports handicapping, but some 2+2 quality books for sports bettors would probably do well in the next few years.

I have no idea, sorry. Maybe the Books forum might have good answers to that question: https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/3...-publications/

Late eighties, the IBM PC graphics support package was programmed to check for IBM or IIBBMM in the first hundred bytes of the bios, if it didn’t find them it would silently unload itself. This caused me a lot of frustration until I found the way to patch it.

Did we get our forum name back? I'm not opposed to merging programming and software in here and munging the names together by any means, but keeping CTH in the name somewhere would be good.

We have, everywhere except the menu on the left.

Menu on the left says "Computer and Technical Help", is that not what you wanted?

This is what I see, and clicking on "Programming & Software Help" takes me to this CTH forum:

If I could find the Computer & Technical Help forum, I would post a question there about how to fix it

Yoda,

Need to purchase a poker laptop. Always used macs before but that software isn’t as compatible with poker. Not a gamer and the entirety of the usage will be for poker.

Few questions:

1. Any recommendations? Price range is flexible, meaning I can afford what I need but don’t want something cheap or to pay for way more than I need.

2. How do I secure it/keep it secure? Total newbie question, but technology has passed me by. What are the measures that people use to protect their accounts?

3. Maybe most importantly, I’m the past I’ve received an email saying my Email password has been compromised in a hack. Do I need to dump these and set my poker accounts up with new emails, or was changing the password enough?

Trying to get back into poker so any information is helpful. Thanks

setup a fresh email account that you only use for poker and activate whichever double authentication factors the poker client offers, like getting a message with a code on your phone to allow login. also use a unique complex password for each poker site that you write down somewhere so you don't forget.

otherwise, to keep your pc free of malware, don't click on random stuff in emails telling you you've won a cruise or such, don't put your credit card details anywhere you don't trust (better off install a plugin called "https everywhere", it works on chrome and edge browsers), don't give anyone personal details like passwords and pin codes only you're supposed to know (you may get emails from scammers impersonating employees of various companies where you hold an account; never give away personal information, a real employee would never need to know them) and you should be just fine.

as far as a new laptop goes, shoot for 16gb of ram, an ssd and a competent modern processor, like a Ryzen 5 on Intel Core i5 or better. they come in different sizes (13.3"-17.3" displays) and thickness/weights , with or w/o a touchscreen, that's up to you to know what you want.
example: https://www.amazon.com/HP-6-Cores-Gr...1&sr=8-20&th=1 .nothing fancy, you may find better deals if you shop around, I just ran a quick search on Amazon.

Great! Thank you very much. I’ll look up that plug-in.

What about clicking links like you provided? On a mac I don’t worry about it but on a PC I’m not sure of the rules.

Also can you recommend a malware protection I should purchase?

Much appreciated.

you can click on 99.9% of links, no worries mac is actually only very mildly safer than windows, nothing magic about macs, that's just what their marketing would have you believe.
either way, all you need to worry about is not giving anyone access to your money, either bank accounts or virtual wallets (like poker accounts)

if you want to get an all-in-one sort of security, I think Kaspersky has everything you need, including a password manager, triggers when clicking dubious links and all, I'm not entirely convinced it's worth it but whatever, it's like 80$ a year and it surely doesn't hurt to have it.

Thanks man.

One more question on security.

I’m going to get coaching and use TeamViewer and Google Docs. Are those safe if I mostly trust the other person? I’ve heard stories about getting hacked but have no idea how any of that works.

google docs are safe and on teamviewer you can have the other guy just view your screen (no privileges to modify anything)

Thanks again. That’s a relief and good to know.

Ordered a laptop per your specs, ready to grind. Cheers

Actually would you mind clarifying this?

Say I get a Bitcoin wallet. And a separate email account from my poker email is hacked. Can they get access to my Bitcoin wallet?

There’s an image from movies where if they’re in they can access anything…but I’m assuming it doesn’t work like that and they’d need to somehow gain access my poker email and then change passwords to access my poker accounts?

welp, the more unique login credentials you use, the safer you are

it's good that you're concerned with this stuff, but no need to be paranoid

if someone hacks 2+2 for example (it has happened before) and your username, password and email get exposed, if the 2+2 password does not correspond to any other password to access accounts where you have money to lose, it super doesn't matter...

it's good practice to have secure unique email accounts, passwords, possibly usernames and multiple authentication factors where it matters and it's good to have a separate burner email for junk, like signing up to raffles, subscribing to newsletters etc.

I knew I shouldn’t have believed the movies!

Seriously thought thanks for the information. It makes sense and is much less of a concern now.
