Advice purchasing a computer monitor for what i do Advice purchasing a computer monitor for what i do

I'm looking to purchase a computer monitor with a budget of around $400 to $500 AUS.

I been using a 28 inch but moved to a new place and where i keep the computer the window is right next to the computer and the light from the outside sort of makes the screen harder to view especially since the stuff i view is basically a full screen of text, unless i keep the shades closed all the time.

I went to view some 32 inch monitors at some stores here in Australia and when comparing the text next to the 28 inch vs 32 inch its a massive difference but being a computer noob I'm not sure which type of computer monitor would be the best to purchase for what i need it for.

This is the stuff i view on the computer monitor 8 to 10 hours a day.

So its basically all text and yeah 8-10 hours, so 32 inch or even bigger? would be ideal i think, but of course budget comes into it which as i said is roughly 400 to 500 ideally but i could add more if really required but prefer not to atm.

The guy at the store mentioned 4k and all this other stuff way over my head and showed me the picture quality difference between them and the $400, but the 4k's averaged $1200 and I'm not sure if i need a 4k for what i am viewing all day? which is that text pic i posted.

This is one of the big computer stores in Australia http://computers.centrecom.com.au/search?w=32%20monitor

anyway any tips would be cool thanks.

I think you need high contrast for the lighting issues. I would guess you don't need 4k.

I have the contrast set to 95

Besides the sunlight can maybe someone suggest what type of monitor to buy? or are they all pretty much the same when buying them around the same price?

I don't think mfgold meant the monitor settings. Windows has a High Contrast mode that you might find helpful. Read here. Give it a try.

A new monitor is unlikely to help you much. Closing the blinds is your best solution otherwise.

ok, yeah pretty much the same re sunlight thanks anyway. Besides the sunlight, as I wanted to buy a 32 inch anyway, can anyone of you recommend what type of computer monitor I should look for to view the type of text I posted a screen shot of?

Isn't it almost impossible to simultaneously look at a large number of lines in a spreadsheet like that?

It looks like the kind of material I can read fine on my phone.

So maybe try the reverse, and explain what you don't what. Find a review of a 32 inch monitor and explain why it doesn't seem suitable.

Yes, I look at columns and rows individually.

I don't really know what monitors don't suit being a computer noob.

I watched some YouTube videos but a lot of stuff was over my head, like TN vs IPS and LED LCD, TN seemed better for gamer's while they recommended IPS for designers, photographers and video editors so not sure where viewing reading text fits in between those?.

Basically just after a computer monitor which is easy on the eye when reading that text for 8 to 10 hours a day etc, don't game or watch movies on it, so basically just to use for work.

This is one sold here in the big store https://www.harveynorman.com.au/comp...s-monitor.html

I spend a fair amount of time looking at numbers on displays. You're definitely doing the right thing here, I've never regretted buying a good monitor, it's the most important part of the computer for a lot of people.

Now since you're a noob, let's just make sure you understand the difference between resolution and size. Higher res allows more stuff on the screen than an equal-sized monitor of a lower resolution. That's basic and you may well know it already, but gotta mention that first.

What 4k does is make things clearer. Basically instead of one pixel worth of detail, they use 4 pixels in about the same space. Smoother text, images, like your iPhone or phone. Right? Right. So with a standard 1920x1080 monitor (same as most TVs), you're counting pixels horizontal by vertical for a standard HD screen to get that. With a 4k in normal use, there are double the amount of pixels in the same space, for example 3840x2160 - so you still see the same thing on the screen, just more defined. You don't need that, but obviously it's desirable.

So first, you want to figure out how much resolution you're looking for, and then how big it is. You can buy a 1080 display in anything from a 20" monitor to a 60" TV if you want. You need to consider how close it's going to be to your face and what looks right.

IPS, TN, etc are talking about the panels. Some are better than others in appearance, color representation, some are more suitable to quicker refresh rates for gamers. For workstation purposes really any will do, but I find IPS less harsh and with more vibrant colors than cheaper TNs. But there are lots of types of IPS and options.

My advice for a standard work monitor you use a lot, start by checking out 2560x1440 (aka QHD) displays with IPS panels. You can fit a lot on the screen and they generally look better than your run-of-the-mill super-cheap things that Mom buys with her Dell. What size - well, you have to go out and sit in front of them.

With my desk, I found 25" displays work best, but many people prefer the more typical 27" display size for that resolution.

That res is also the sweeter spot between price and performance. Here's an idea how how many prices and sizes there are for that res:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...NG&PageSize=36

Finally, I'd probably make sure it has both HDMI and Displayport for maximum connectivity. A good display can go for a long time and I've found it worthwhile to be forward looking with them.

The monitor you linked to appears to be a common 1080 with a very high price. And the monitor selection sucks I wouldn't buy there.

Knowing zero about Australia's shops, a quick look seems to suggest far better options. On the first try I found this:

https://www.umart.com.au/Monitors_C....0.4532.0.0.0.0

Here's a $299 IPS 27" in that res just as an example

hope that helps you with a place to start

Hey Minirra really appreciate your reply! I made a bit of a mistake in this thread saying I basically only need it for reading text but I need it as much for viewing video replays which is also for work.

Just to give a bit more info. Regarding the resolution etc, I only have one thing open at a time on the screen -- for example that screen shot picture I posted in the op which is a database that stores all that text and saved videos -- is on the screen and fully open probably 60% of the time, while the other 40% I watch video replays for work from my database -- basically in the database I click on a icon and it opens the saved videos (each column in that screen shot has a saved video which I replay over and over in those 8 to 10 hours a day.

Once I watch the video which is open in full screen also -- I close the video screen and I'm backing looking at the text again, and then again I click on a new video and watch it again, basically this is what I do for work all day watching videos and reading text.

So from this I take it, the resolution does't really make much of a difference then I assume?

Second, regarding the monitor size, you mentioned desk and sweet spot, since I keep a few things (work stuff equipment etc) next to my keyboard and my desk is sort of set up weird (to suit) -- the monitor is a bit of distance from me, about 2 to 3 feet hence why I was thinking to go for the bigger screen size because of the text size, prefer bigger text size etc.

At the moment I am using a 28 inch -- but the 32 inch when compared at the store vs the 28 inch right along side it looked much more suitable, just bigger text and this is one of the key points I am after and why I want to purchase a new monitor.

So basically, ideally I'm after a monitor which is really easy on the eyes viewing my database with all that text in it, and also good quality video picture quality. If you or anyone from this thread think there is one from that site you posted that suits the description I am after I'll buy it haha that's basically shows how much of a noob I am regarding computers and monitors salesstaff love me
