What's the point of being the best if nobody knows how good you are? What's the point of being the best if nobody knows how good you are?

The more people who know about you, the less anonymous you are. This isn't complicated.

I mean a sports bettors is human after all, and there is satisfaction in that too.
This is an assertion you're making that reveals a hypothesis about the bettor that is far from obvious. The assumption is that the loss of money is offset by the increase of fame. This isn't obviously true and could well be false.

I remind you that this is where we started:

An imaginary sportsbettor could love sportsbetting and all the work that comes with it so much that his life goal is to be the best sportsbettor he can possibly be. His goal is to develop the best models he can and to find the best edges his 'opponent', the market, has to offer. He is completely immersed in this process and is regularly or even permanently in a state of flow when he is working.

Money itself may not even be a driving factor for this person but merely a manner of keeping score. No matter how much money he makes, his goal is to get even better at the game of beating the market. His motivation can derive wholly from his love for sportsbetting, his drive to find the best edges the market has to offer and the wonderful feeling he has when engaged in this activity.

dynamite22 I'm curious how you come up with this answer?

OP presents an extreme example of someone who has taken steps NOT to be known so that he can continue what he's doing. I think in every other case the people in a given field are going to know who is at least a contender for 'being the best.' Therefor I take the OP as trying to figure out what motivates people to be the best and, being no psychologist, I'm anyway going to say that there are many motivations.

I've put things on my to-do list after I've done them just for the satisfaction of crossing them off my list.

What I meant was the way he explained it, for someone to explain it in such detail and be correct in what he said as he is, would either have to be one himself (An imaginary sportsbettor) or was one at one time previously, or he must deal with these type of people a very often, and more likely as a profession.

Not everything is a competition and sometimes there is no "best". There's the satisfaction of your endeavor and contribution. As with many things, the cup of Ego is best tasted in moderation.
