When I think about the 80s it is not the music I remember so much as the films like Platoon and Wall Street....though Madonna was super big with her Material Girl and Like A Virgin hits as was Cindy Lauper. Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen were enormously popular in the 80s too.
The 80s had a lot of people dressing and acting preppy and yuppie and it also introduced punk rock....I remember seeing Billy Idol once when his big hit Eyes Without A Face came out, of course Hammer, Whitney and Bobby Brown had their day then, too.
It was a very materialistic decade and that's why Gordon Gecko's "Greed is good" motto became so famous.
I suppose punk led to rap.
