Just taken my own advice and got some Highland Park for the first time in ages. It's excellent, I need to listen to myself more.

My left thumb, hand, and wrist have become partially disabled recently, evidently from a pinched nerve somewhere in the system. The thumb seems to be the nexus of it. Movements involving a twisting of the wrist combined with load on the thumb set it off. It also doesn't like quick twisting of the wrist type motions. The symptom is nerve jolts that run up from the hand, through the elbow on into the shoulder. I've been treating it by massaging sore points around the thumb that lead up muscles and tendons to the elbow and upper arm. Also stretching exercises for the shoulders and upper back. Also, abstaining from any of the kinds of movements or hand activity that sets off the nerve jolts. It seems to be slowly healing barring recurrent reinjury and hopefully will gradually heal back to something closer to normal.

This has given me a new appreciation for just how amazing and versatile the human hand is. And what a powerful tool our opposable thumb provides us. It's a case of not realizing just how great something is until you lose it. I keep thinking of the movie "The Pope of Greenwich Village" where the Eric Roberts character gets his thumbs cut off by mobsters. This was especially bad for the guy because he made his living as a high class career waiter. Imagine trying to do that job with no thumbs. I'm now noticing just how much stuff my hands do almost automatically for me every day. Sometimes it's like they have a mind of their own.

As long as this, hopefully, temporary disabling hand movement does not significantly impair your ability to swig whisky from a tumbler or heft a glass of Beer your life is still very much ok. If you become so disabled that you have to have help pouring your drinks and/or must drink alcohol using a straw or other device then you should apply for disability insurance from the appropriate government agency. Drinking alcohol is a right, not a privilege. That is a SMP slogan.

I've never considered the UK as part of Europe. It may, technically, be part of Europe by the geographers and other political authorities but it is separate according to my thinking. Iceland is part of Europe according to The Authorities. Ridiculous.
