They can be defeated with better education, better social fairness and stability in income and resources ie prosperity and a society that rewards responsible behavior and punishes unethical behavior a little more seriously or makes selfish behavior that initiates conflicts to others that did nothing essentially wrong financially not as rewarding. So competition must be there but not unethical competition as much.
You need a world that rewards effort and service to the community and ethical conduct overall as agreed by most people (what that is and adjusts in time), offers chances to all and substantial education and mentor-ship to all kids. So the family has better chance to be a good family to the kids and the environment cares for them so that they grow up more educated and with more opportunities and aware of the possibilities and problems around them instead of randomly left in their good or bad luck.
People that grow up to be educated, confident, shaped in character by the understanding that you can achieve a lot with fair effort in a more just world will have fewer insecurities and feel less of a desire to operate unethically to get ahead. Education and especially math builds character (ie confidence and humility at the same time, understanding of higher complexity and the limitations of one's knowledge and the power of expanding that knowledge that can lead to better decision making and citizenship), discipline, reduces the negative power of frustration and laziness and offers a sense of purpose in personal growth and the pursuit of happiness with legitimate means that are not short lived and ignore the reality of one's condition. A society that is forgiving and helpful in a non intrusive but responsible manner will help people out of the misery of insecurity, selfishness, mediocrity, unhealthy addictions and simplistic reasoning. Study what makes a person happy and how to responsibly provide that to most with common efforts, higher technology and science. A responsibly happy person with life that rewards the experience of having it is no longer as much of a problem to others around them but tends instead to be more friendly, confident and not depressed.
