You should probably scratch off "stand up comedian" off of potential careers.

I'm just trying to blend in with the science crowd....

A chemist, an engineer and a mathematician were all asleep in a hotel when several fires broke out in their respective rooms.

The engineer woke up, saw the fire, ran into the bathroom, turned on the faucets full-blast, flooding out the entire apartment, which put out the fire, and went back to sleep.

The chemist woke up, saw the fire, ran over to his desk, pulled out his lab book, and began working out all sorts of equations. Soon, he threw down his pencil, got a graduated cylinder out of his suitcase, and measured out a precise amount of water. He threw it on the fire, extinguishing it, with not a drop wasted, and went back to sleep.

The mathematician takes a match, lights it, and extinguishes it in a glass of water. He declares: “A solution exists.” and goes back to sleep.

ha, ha....

Chezlaw declares a solution obviously exists and goes back to sleep.

BTM2 organises an extensive research program to check a solution exists and what colour it should be

David Sklansky asks: if there is a stranger in one room and your pet dog in another, what's the probability that the only coin you have is biased if it comes up tails the first n times you toss it?

Aaron W thinks of several interesting related problem he can set for his maths course. To be fair to the mixed abilities and interests of the group he ends up with a multiple choice question to which the correct answer is 'its wet'

Masque de Z tragically never gets to finish his brief note on how it should be handled in a scientific society

Rikers incoherently splutters out 'energy', 'efficiency', 'entropy', 'equilibrium' and other words beginning with 'e' a great deal. Its later confirmed that he had earlier been out drinking with chezlaw.

The RGTers in the hotel next door gather and pray for protection from the fire. Later some of them say it was god showing his displeasure at the atheists, others rejoice at gods benevolence when miraculously one SMPer is pulled unharmed from the scene of devastation and chared corpses. On learning who it was that was saved they all agree that god moves in mysterious ways.

I can't seem to find any statistics on student results in mixed ability classes vs those of students in sets. (Do any countries still believe in streaming?) Would be interesting.

Zeno realizes the fire is a solution to another problem, invites the ex over with an indication that he would like to reconcile and "accidentally" blocks all the exits on his way out. He sleeps like a baby in his new suv.

Smrk2 dies while writing a long-ish note about whether it is moral to harm fires while denying that he cares about morality.

Matt does nothing. No point in not burning to death since life is meaningless.

Ryanb later succumbs to smoke inhalation while looking up interesting pictures and videos of fires.

Bruce quietly lets himself out, and later writes a letter to the local news correcting them on the body count.

Chezlaw throws scotch on the fire because "scotch is better than water" but survives long enough to be questioned by police and his last words are an impassioned argument about them being far too results oriented.

In almost important news: The recently elected Pope secretly admits that he is just as clueless, ignorant and stupid as all the other previous Popes combined. The Archbishop of Canterbury agrees with the new Pope at a private dinner with his favorite mistress.

In other news:

None of this matters of course because the collective idiocy of most people has increased geometrical over the last 5000 years.

People who yap about science are usually those that know the least about it.

SMP starts a religion that nets a record 7 billion dollars in 3 months. It then collapses from internal bickering and all the money disappears along with BTM and Chez and Zeno. Rumors surface that the unholy trinity are spotted in San Marino living on a private estate. The Dali Llama is also seen on the estate - fondling hot babes and swimming naked in the pool.

I'm on vacation. Have ~2 days left. Why is it that when I'm not around as much and don't check threads, trolls ooze up from the depths and disrupt the forum? Just rhetorical.

Over the last few days I've been drinking wine only and also been having fabulous home-cooked meals by, essentially, a master Italian cook.

Beer has not contaminated my lips for days.

Most people are oblivious. Completely oblivious. It is obvious and 50 years of personal observations by my keen scientific mind completely confirms this so fundamental fact. In the proper form/format a great thread could be generated about this.

It would only be worthwhile to whack the Pope if the election of another one could also be prevented.

I love the Ocean.

Descartes had a good and mostly easy life. Then he died. He wrote many books, some were lost. It may have better if all of them were lost.

Probably not worth starting a thread on this (and I have a feeling it has come up before).

0^0 = 1, right?

The modern consensus appears to be that it is:

https://cs.uwaterloo.ca/~alopez-o/ma...xt/node14.html

although I know that some calculators have it as undefined. Does anyone here have a stance on this?
