Sure, but hey as an English salutation or greeting likely came before hi ( which was possibly a Dutch mispronunciation) and way before hello which was popularized by Bell the telephone man.

Speaking of the Dutch, I just read in Ascent of Money, that they created the first stock exchange. Bully for them. They also created the hot, tall Blonde. Two things that are essential to make the world go around.

What is the point of greeting, again? Is it to demonstrate that we're not about to kill each other with swords or something?

That is exactly its main function. The smile and friendly gestures and facial expressions evolved partially for the same reason. That is also why in almost every cultural when you invite someone into your abode or place of encamped etc, that you offer them some form of drink and/or food. The gesture being that you incur the persons goodwill and that you and household will less likely be killed, raped, robbed, enslaved or otherwise be abused by a "stranger" if you feed them or give some form of hospitality. Overall it pays dividends and is a useful survival mechanism.

"Tea or coffee?"
"Tea, please."
"How do you take it?"
"Milk, no sugar."

Thanks, I'd be interested in reading this. I'm currently reading a fictionalized version of Amsterdam's early stock market, called the Coffee Trader, by David Liss. I like almost all of Liss's books especially, "The Whiskey Rebels."

Watching the winter Olympics I've become convinced that what the world needs is more curling and less thermonuclear annihilation.

I quit challenges right at the point where the challenge was overcome, which tends to leave me without an end product. My work portfolio is filled with projects that are nearly done.

I quit playing the guitar after learning to play ten songs. If I can play ten, I suspect I could learn to play eleven.

Life is too short and full of challenges not to be a quitter.

Physical challenges are a different story.

The mechanism is interesting.

So this is what "social skills" are, then? Some atavistic survival strategy?

While driving country roads in my local area, it is not only a social custom and a neighborly embrace from distance to wave at bystanders, it also signals to them that they are seen for sake of concern for their sense of security on a narrow shoulder near fast driving traffic. A multi-purpose reflex or habit.

The school made it on the early cut, which is great but some other schools did not, which is concerning in many details.

However if you like hearing an integrated community school in ruralish Alabama made it, please feel free to join in the celebration.

They are a plural thing, so they are more than one thing. Skills in getting on in a world filled with nervous and blood-thirsty social animals probably has some sort of relationship to survival.

All of evolutionary theory is tautology.

I also can't think of a thing that isn't somehow related to ancestry.

The welfare state? A judiciary? A penal system? Comprehensive education?

And how come family members greet each other?
