Today the student asserts his incapacity as a privilege. - Philip Roth (From The Human Stain, p 331, First Vintage International Edition, 2001]

Could make a thread about this but decided against it. Still, wanted to hear comments from posters on the above. I taught college students, but only for a few years, when a grad student. Did not teach High School or at lower levels of education.

Students don't assert anything unrelated to the use of mobile phones. Society does the asserting.

I bolded the error in the quote. It was never any different in the past except for in the small number of students (those who exist now and those who existed in the past) who suffer from an excess of gullibility and obedience.

Incapacity/ capacity Is a situational condition, so it's like burden and privilege in that sense. Absent a specific capacity and privilege beyond just being in a role of student, what meaning can be gleaned about such an assertion?

Let's come from a different angle- Why would an incapable person become burdened when finding or being given capacity?

You want to know the problem w/ having a woman in your life according to Howard Beale? He will tell you: YOU HAVE A WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE!

Have to remember birthdays, 'special' days, she can never have a fat ass, she is always right. The list goes on forever and all of that just to risk a heart attack. You can have them.

It's not too bad if you see them less than 4 or 3 times a week.

A matter of frequency for me. See anyone daily, and either they get sick of me or I get sick of them.

I think George Carlin said it well:
"I like people...

in short doses".

Bingo. Philip trips into his own box of fallacies and blindsides himself with that silly 'it was better when I was in my prime' shtick. The book is not a bad read but he took himself down a few notches in my estimation with such a juvenile error.

I have the answer. Spike Mulligan is God. That explains Everything. Class dismissed. No reason to post anything more.

I'm enjoying a rare and uncommon sight in my area. Fog rolled in after the sun rise and now lingers late in a misty morning. I know the sun is out there somewhere, having fun.

I once bought a whole tenderloin and took it home to butcher it myself. However, not knowing what I was doing I'm afraid I butchered it.

Arguably the best worst music video ever. If you click on it, I advise that you watch it closely until the end. It has twists and turns.

The Pineapple in Kentish Town is a beautiful pub. Good Welsh red ale, and the obscure factor. It's in The Book, of course.

Spent a while looking around Camden Square for the Wamy Einehouse memorial. Had to ask a stranger where it was, a woman exiting from a church who knew exactly. I thought there'd be graffiti and street art and stuff, rather than just a tree with pieces of paper stuck in it. Thank heavens for Castle's, sanctuary from the tourists and hipsters.

I did not know the Welsh produced a good red ale. Useful information. Thanks.

Whenever someone mentions "The Book", I automatically think of The Bible. But this leads me to suggest that the above linked book be inserted into The Bible to help bring it up to date. It should be inserted just before Revelations, sort of to prime the pump so to speak and get you ready for a heady read.
