I've got a brand new dvd that won't play. It must be the disc itself because others work on the same computer. The machine seems to fail to recognize that it contains the disc. Does anyone know any little trick you can do to make it work?

First double-test that it's the disc (and not that there's some sort of incompatibility) that's not working by trying it in something else that accepts dvds.

Then google google google

Then ask whoever gave it to you for a receipt and take it back

The dvd was the film No Country for Old Men, which, coincidentally, was on tv this evening. However, I think maybe I now need the dvd to watch it again in order to make sense of it.

i'm taking a critical thinking class next semester and the required reading so far is The God Delusion, a book by Carl Sagan, and a book entitled, The Skeptics Dictionary. I can already tell that this class and teacher is going to be awesome.

Carl Sagan is awesome.

The laws of physics are the way they are because if they were not then we would not be here to observe them.

Ugh...I hope that the God Delusion book is being used as an example of all the TERRIBAD arguments Dawkins makes. I'd love to see the syllabus, though. Do you have a pdf?

the class hasn't actually started, so there's no pdf. but that's funny that you say his arguments are bad because when i was reading it i was thinking along totally different lines as him. i can't remember specifically which arguments i disagreed with, but i remember getting caught up in my own thoughts and thinking, "ok, he's a world renowned scientist who's a millionaire, you're own arguments are probably misguided and he's probably right, so just stop thinking and keep reading" lol.

which of his arguments do you consider bad?

It's not an explanation, though! That's not 'why' they are the way they are.

Yeah, it doesn't explain anything but it makes sense.

Will we ever find out "why" the universe is the way it is or will it be an infinite regression.

or will it be circular like this:

a occurs because of b. b occurs because of c. c occurs because of d. d occurs because of a.

It doesn't EXPLAIN anything...so what is there to 'make sense'?

So it does not "make sense"?

It makes sense in that it's trivially true. It doesn't make sense in that you're presenting the effect as the cause. But I'm feeling optimistic, so I'll assume the problem lies with your phrasing.

Had to blow off my friend's (presumably) good party for my cousin's crappy party, because my cousin's party is also her birthday and most of her friends are either out of the country or going to regular NYE parties. Sigh.

Nah they're like 20 miles apart and the crappy one's over now anyway. Since I'm currently working nights, it was kind of a beer for breakfast experience anyway. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Happy New Year, all you non-Chinese people. And HNY to all you Chinese people whenever it rolls around.

Not threadworthy but quick math question to settle a discussion I'm having. Is there an EV optimal number of bingo cards to play? I think it makes no difference but want to confirm.

Just to clarify that I'm taking about online bingo which (AFAIK, never played it) puts a fixed % of ticket price into the pool and charges a rake same way MTTs work in poker, assume no guaranteed pools.

If you canīt play zero bingo cards then play one and your EV will be the best possible, because you will lose the least on average.

Right, obviously this. But I mean assuming you have to play for some reason, eg clearing a bonus. Is there any difference between buying 1 card for 20 games or 20 cards for 1 game?
