I think you can't say whatever **** even in the name of a free discussion. Or you have to phrase it properly EVERY TIME, making the reservations and referring to "some people think...they are/were wrong obviously...", and so on.

You should know when you are walking on thin ice.

fwiw he isn't temp-banned for any of the controversial posts. Mat said he didn't think he needed to take action on any of that. He's temped because of the PM he sent to PVN along with his attempt at pay-back or whatever you want to call it.

The temp-ban for an 'inappropriate PM' is deserved. Bruce appears to not be a student of Marcus Aurelius or Confucius. Of course he is not required to be, so there is that also.

Given the level of volatility, a vacation was probably in order.

Yeah, saw it. Incredible how much you can lose in a moment. He was just about to kind of winning as he had the long explanation and introspection, apologizing a bit, in the thread that's still up.

Already making that pvn thread was doomed to fail. The PM is incomprehensible to me. How is it possible for anyone to make such a PM? It must be about butthurt, tilt, combined with not having that last restraint: "how the **** does this look, me being a mod and all? Is it really worth it?"

Well, crap. What was the thread about, showing how much of a liar Pvn has been re the Bruce situation? I could have added plenty of examples. The PM is an emotional mistake, but if Bruce means war, that's easy ground to take.

Well if that is the case, he needs to brush up with some Sun Tzu.

Still think the last post Bruce has up for the general public is top notch. Bruce, if you feel too ashamed for coming back, let this be your kick ass testament:

pvn is essentially an untouchable for some time to come.

Clearest water you'll ever see, and the mining operations are still intact underneath with all the usual stuff, but also including a chapel and saloon. It was an underground city for about a hundred years now flooded under 50-100 feet if water. I took a tour couple weeks ago. Most of the scenes from the movie The Abyss were filmed there.
Looks interesting, although a cave/cavern dive where torches are not allowed is a little mind boggling. However, I've always had a preference for salty water over fresh water. (For instance, I like lobster, crab and scallops.)

This could work. I'm far too lazy to do it, though - Weymouth is around 3-4 hours' drive from mine so I don't go there every weekend. There's also some question around how to deal with the time delay of particles floating from Isel of Wight to Weymouth - it may be a slow process.

Vis measurement may be a little ad-hoc as well. The standard test is lowering a whilte disc until it can no longer be seen. This would get vis at the surface, but the amount of floating crap varies by depth. At the weekend, my unscientific observation was that the amount of floating crap was acceptable at 5-8m; but ridiculous at 30m.

That could work - are bits of mud from Southampton likely to be different to mud from Weymouth?

It's not a cave though, it's a mine. Man made. So I don't think torches are prohibited.

There's also nothing living down there. I was surprised when the tour guide told me this, because it's been flooded for 50 years. Nothing. He said they had a fish swim in a few months back, but they lost track of it.

Yes. The analysis could require something simple (a few organics or metals) to something more complex(rare earth metals, radiochemistry etc.)

A "fingerprint" can be made of soils using an electron microscope. We have a guy we use at U. of Colorado who does this. I got to meet him a month ago. He actually counts the different compounds of lead, and other compounds with lead adsorbed to them. This isn't limited to just lead, of course. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science...2759220290087X

EPA sometimes uses this technique to build a case for re-compensation for pollution remediation from primary responsible parties under Superfund.

I would like personally, and for the whole SMP forum also, to welcome back our good friend BruceZ.

I was tossing about a few ideas and came up with a suggestion that we should get BruceZ a gift. A case of his favorite beer, a gift certificate to his favorite local restaurant, a very good bottle of scotch etc., or something that he may suggest. Not forced on him mind you, just a show of support and appreciation in a material way.

Great to have you back Bruce!

Thanks Zeno. And btw, that pm certainly wasn't meant to suggest anything beyond the activities mentioned in the thread. It's original purpose was to send a link to the thread, but that became unnecessary when the thread was found by the recipient. I don't know why I thought it was a good idea to send the pm anyway. I wasn't thinking clearly. But without a link, it sounded a lot more ominous than I intended. I actually expected it to be reported to an admin. I didn't anticipate it being copied to the forum.

The thread itself was not something appropriate for a moderator to start against a regular user.

I want to sincerely thank FoldnDark, chezlaw, Zeno, TomCowley, swissmiss, and AlexM for their support in this. And especially I want to thank masque who has been a very good friend. He's been giving me online anger management lessons.

I've been planning a post for the history forum since it is the 100th anniversary of the beginning of The Great War*, as it was called then. In Sept of 1914 the conflict evolved (or devolved) into the trench warfare style. Anyway, the insidiously vulgar, stupid, and ignorant French** have much to answer for, for helping to screw up the last century so badly***.

*See Barbara Tuckman's excellent book, The Guns of August.

**They make great wine and can cook like gods. One of the best meals I've ever had was in a great restaurant in Toulouse.

***Treaty of Versailles being only one crime.
