They had to do a post-mortem, because he died within a certain number of days of having had an operation, in which case they have to determine whether the operation contributed to the death. I don't find your question insensitive. In fact, I'm more concerned with whether "autopsy" is a horrible, American vulgarization of "post-mortem".
