Just faced down a guy in the street for being abusive towards a Muslim woman on crutches. **** could see I was ready to go. My brother is dying and I am not in the mood. Neither of us was hard, thank goodness. London is going haywire. Some pints this evening in the Exmouth Arms. Chez knows what I'm talking about.

Civility went out with Jane Austen.

Pints ease the stress of dealing with the throbbing masses.

Haywire is nothing new - possibly more extensive given the current over year-long pandemic. Check up on the fun goings on at the time of the European plague(s) to put things in perspective. And don't let a single personal event* cloudy your normal happy and optimistic outlook. This is the best of all possible worlds you know. And don't forget it.

*Remember the importance of sample size. A mathematician should know better.

chez approves. Sorry about your brother - that sucks.

btw I've started harassing lamposts and gave some moderate abuse to a tree. Sometimes his lordship joins in and pisses on them.

Excellent. Leibniz was a statistical outlier, right?

Mondrian Blue Plaque, Parkhill Road. Mondrian has got something. The false ease of symmetry.

Charlie, your assessment that it was good that neither one of were hard seems to contain a miscalculation. Did you forget to carry a one when you were adding things up?

There is nothing better than orchestra of sounds surrounding a good punch or kick to the liver. That needs to be taken into account.

I might feel happier if I were able to punch the guy out, if that's your point.

There is far too much to fix here.

Why are you set on fixing things? You must be drunk with power and on some moralistic crusade. You are as bad as Plato. Curb your enthusiasm.

Nah, just regular old normal drunk. Nothing wrong with optimism, except the entire concept. Happiness is another matter. Very much a worthwhile endeavor. Quite easy to achieve if you eschew optimism

Certainly you have a particular definition that would render this non contestable? regular drunk myself hah.. Im currently thinking of the term as something of a +EV bet..but ill allow that there is some messy fingers crossed garbage a float/

because you're Brian this question hovers between earnest and jest.

Optimism leads to poor decision making and disappointment.

By that logic, pessimism is awesome.

Sure, but only because we live in a universe that includes only linear variable relationships.

That aint logic, not even simplistic logic. The negation of optimism is not pesimism

It's like saying being too fat is bad for you therefore logically being too thin is awesome

If optimism leads to disappointment then pessimism leads to ______?

disappointment seems most likely. I havn't noticed pessimists wandering about full of joy.

as well as poor decision making.

Both have unreasonable expectations for the future. One suffers when their expectations are not met. The other front runs this by suffering now.

Do pessimists usually think thier expectations have been exceded? That's not my experience of them. At least optimists gets to enjoy the journey.

Once you realise it's ~all one long journey then maybe optimism is the way to go.

Realism - now that is a tough gig.

They've no time to experience it. There are loads of future things for which to suffer now. So many that any relief upon nothing bad happening just a minute ago seems small.

Trusting that you have the skills to deal with bridges when you come to them might be alright. This does assume that you have those skills or can develop them.

The primary skill seems to be knowing that the sunrise or sunset looks pretty much the same on either side of the bridge.

That would be a quite unrealistic thing to expect of yourself.

Sometimes it's hard to tell.

I use the Pete Townsend financial planning method. The plan is to die before you get old.

Some claim this is pessimistic. Others claim it is optimistic. I dont know how realistic it is but beer is helping as per usual. Despite that it's currently not clear as I'm failing miserably at not getting old but have also so far failed miserably to run out of money.
