I find audiobooks completely inadequate. Often enough, esp w/ a book like this, it's easy to loose his train of thought and flipping back a few pages is necessary which is more easily done w/ a book.

His main theme is that we do not understand our own creations and that means trouble. There's a terrifying chapter on climate change that adds up to 'WAAF.'

There is nothing "terrifying" about climate change, Howard. Calm down. It is a useful device and ploy to instill fear to make you more easy to manipulate. I could go into details but it is Friday and I have get drinking. IPA's at first and then Whiskey as the day wears on.

It's approaching time to start taking to the streets and fight. Holland and austria did it for a minute. But if these draconian measures stay in place another month or two there will be ****ing murders.

The main consequence of climate change is that more people will move to the PNW.

Maybe should work up to it. Some light calisthenics, maybe. Wouldn't want to pull a hammy or have a coronary event from the exertions

There was also a bareknuckle fight on in Florida yesterday between two women. Paige vanzant, hottie versus the other girl. Packed indoor arena. Florida are on par with california after Floridas governor took the advice of michael levitt.

A cleaner example is North Dakota vs South Dakota. And you can go on and on down the list. The science is clear. Lockdowns and masks cost-benefit is absurd.

Work up to overthrowing this tyranny, yes we should maybe do that.

Looks like GameStop chart in background

"I Know the End"
Phoebe Bridgers

Somewhere in Germany, but I can't place it
Man, I hate this part of Texas
Close my eyes, fantasize
Three clicks, and I'm home
When I get back I'll lay around
And I'll get up and lay back down
Romanticize a quiet life
There's no place like my room
But you had to go
I know, I know, I know
Like a wave that crashed and melted on the shore
Not even the burnouts are out here anymore
And you had to go
I know, I know, I know
Out in the park, we watch the sunset
Talking on a rusty swing set
After awhile you went quiet, and I got mean
I'm always pushing you away from me
But you come back with gravity
And when I call, you come home
A bird in your teeth
So I gotta go
I know, I know, I know
When the sirens sound, you'll hide under the floor
But I'm not gonna go down with my hometown in a tornado
I'm gonna chase it
I know, I know, I know
I gotta go now
I know, I know, I know
Driving out into the sun
Let the ultraviolet cover me up
Went looking for a creation myth
Ended up with a pair of cracked lips
Windows down, scream along
To some America first rap, country song
A slaughterhouse, an outlet mall
Slot machines, fear of God
Windows down, heater on
Big bolts of lightning hanging low
Over the coast, everyone's convinced
It's a government drone or an alien spaceship
Either way, we're not alone
I'll find a new place to be from
A haunted house with a picket fence
To float around and ghost my friends
No, I'm not afraid to disappear
The billboard said, "The end is near"
I turned around, there was nothing there
Yeah, I guess the end is here
The end is here
The end is here
The end is here
The end is here

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask but I'm currently reading 'Six Easy Pieces' by Richard Fenyman. It's based on lectures he gave in the early sixties. For someone like myself who has a laymans interest in science (regretably I never took Physics as a subject at school) what are the main advances that we have learned since the lectures were given? At the moment I'm reading his discussion about the atom and how it is made up but there is a lot of mentions of 'we just don't know yet' or 'we still haven't worked this part out' so it would be interesting to see what we have learned since then with regards to the subjects he is discussing.

I think we have learned a lot more. Even the greatest geniuses become kind of antique as time passes by.

Couple of mentions:

Inflationary cosmology, the proposal of the Higgs field, and the persistence of General Relativity to continue it's unbroken record of success despite the expectation that it will break down at some point because gravity is not a force in GR.

And I will call String theory wrong despite much of a generation of theorists continuing to waste their time w/ it before somebody shows up and mentions it as an advance.

Forgot to mention the detection of the microwave background radiation

I doubt String theory will wind up being a total waste of time. It will fit in somewhere, sometime into some theory of reality. It's not clear right now is all. It's interesting to wonder whereby people have put so much effort into any theory especially one that contains mathematics as being a flat out waste of time.

String theory has the misfortune of not making any testable predictions and, worse, none of the required features have displayed themselves in any experiment such as at the runs of the LHC. The theoretical physicist Sean Carroll begins a sentence thusly: 'String theorists, and other people untethered to reality......' He's not a fan.

The String theorists are still hard at it bec there's nothing else in sight re a quantum theory of gravity except for the occasionally mentioned Quantum Loop Gravity that I know nothing about. The field is at a standstill and if the next, higher energy run of the LHC doesn't find any support for string theory I think these people will be forced to abandon it.
