I think both are often true.

I believe the real problem is caring. That is, worrying about whether you are interesting or not to others. I don't think one could be socially anxious unless they cared about this.

I'm reminded of the scene from Pulp Fiction where Uma Thurman's character talks about having a comfortable silence. John Travolta is only there because he hadn't a choice and couldn't care less of the impression he is giving. Uma's character asks why do people feel it's necessary to constantly yap to feel comfortable. I've had those only to get asked why I am quiet.

In large groups, having dinner sober. It's useful to have other wise useless knowledge about things such as current events or facts about movies, often.

Jordan Peterson gives good tips at times that stick in me head. He says on the subject of social anxiety in a group: never address the crowd. It doesn't work. One to one's only. He's right.

You won't understand the lingo or the scene. Unless you are 40 years or younger and either come from Ireland or Scotland

Everyone wants to be interesting to others, even sociopaths and psychopaths.

However, I have learnt that I am secure enough in myself to not be so bothered if I'm not interesting to everyone.

I think, increasingly, that our pop-psychology understanding of why people drink does not apply to most people. Quite simply, I drink because I'm happier when I'm drunk or tipsy. Alcohol tends to have that effect. It has little to nothing to do with underlying insecurity or anxiety.

I think this pop-psychology understanding that it must mean there's something missing or there's some underlying issues only really applies to problem drinkers. We've overgeneralized it because according to "health experts" - all drinking is problem drinking. This is plain nonsense.

I don't think you are the first person to notice this effect

I still don't quite get it.

It seems like a cool way to help people who have a specific disability that prevents them from using Google maps. I imagine that at least four people have such a disability

That's an amazing technology, just three words. I just might start an OOT thread wherein ppl list what three words they'd use.

Mine: Sunny, cactus, drought.

It is never too early to start drinking, especially on Friday. A day the Lord has made so let us rejoice in it.

How do you get by being sober. How. What does a tea totalers diary read like. This question is to anyone who is both sober and happy.

The guidelines pertain to actual bodily damage caused to internal organs by alcohol. It's nothing to do with psychology.

By being too busy working, studying the universe, doing math and exploring other female carbon based units, trading derivatives, sleeping and driving to and from work in stupid traffic that requires to be sober apparently (a lot of these do). Also designing scientific society and bookmarking endless things i still have to study before death ends everything. Contrary to popular belief "authoring" long posts still takes only 0.5% of day.

Thanks masque. I'd only argue with the being too busy working.for most that is precisely what leads to alcohol dependence. They say if you love your job, you never really work, or words to that effect. However that is only true for a small percentage of people. I do however take your point. I was fascinated when I was studying. But for most, you go out into the world and don't work a dream job. You're exhausted. A drink takes the edge off.

My point is moot. People turn to alcohol no matter their status. You offered reasonable alternatives.

Yes that is exactly the secret Mac. This is what scientific society has as aim to love your job and have also a lot of free time eventually to explore things you like. I drink only in meals or some social events, not for recreation, almost never really to do anything like take the edge off. I take the edge of by cursing the living $#@* while driving, passenger free (otherwise i am respectable and stoic lol), while maintaining ethical integrity towards the mix of decent people and morons sharing the street guilty or not lol. You can tell a ton about the character of other people by the way they drive. Plenty of opportunity to curse the hell out of everyone while driving alone and maintain equilibrium when you deal with them face to face.

Basically having bigger problems to work on that are not finished keeps you engaged and angry only at stupidity and opportunity loss not your luck or the world or the way nature works etc.

I highly suggest studying the universe and more math endlessly because it is the root (and route) of happiness and puts things in perspective, maintaining optimism and eventual love for all humans even the aholes too at some fundamental decision time level (because its understandable how they get there, the role of chaos and probability, and making sense of how we become who we are is a collective business really). Having come to a currently satisfactory understanding about things like free will, luck, the big game going on out there in the universe, complexity etc, brings peace really and still maintains curiosity for more exploration.

So the edge is really taken at random points nobody is watching. Also some sports and action can help too keep you happy and not frustrated at the ugliness (which still makes sense to be that way though and how to fix it possibly). Self reflecting and trying to improve also keeps you not very angry at others.

Basically the more things make sense to you the less frustrating things are while still leaving plenty of room and requirement for struggle to be understood even better.
