When the apparent (not 100% certain) robbery has failed and you are no longer in risk of life and the "villain" appears to be under the influence, the correct choice is indeed to let them escape if it has to be that way. They can have a gun and when they face death they may use. Or you may kill them over a robbery which is not acceptable behavior if not in personal risk.

I am sorry this happened in my city of birth and the streets i knew as a student. The person that died is responsible for poor choices and those that contributed to his death are also heartless losers. In other words they are all aholes in all sides. We collectively fail each other with our choices.
