Re: Random dude on Reddit solves hard problem of conciousness

“The other” must be fairly elastic to be able to fit for description all the seemingly endless variety of apparently others.

Do you only do battle with the Other part of your conscience, or do you go all the way?

In my view the Other is mostly a nuisance. It's the spazz telling me not make a joke because it's not PC. Or not to look at a girls ass when she walks by. The Other has probably saved my ass enough to let it live though.
Expected to have sex by this age. Expected to hold down a full time job by that age. Expected to partner up by this age. Expected to have kids by that age. Expected to be monogamous at all ages.

The Other expects things of you. Pushes things on you. Some fitting; some not. These things are both moral and non-moral in nature. The more you meet these expectations the more you seize to exist. You become a kind of living embodiment or amalgamation of the Other. Inauthentic. Unexamined. Worthless.

But hey, at least people refer to you as "a nice guy". That's something.

"We sacrifice two thirds of ourselves trying to be like others". - Schopenhauer.

Some fall far to the side of agreeable - on the the agreeableness personality dimension. Harder for these poor folk, I suppose (me included).

Re: Random dude on Reddit solves hard problem of conciousness

I have tried to be common the most part of my life. I'm getting there.

Maybe common doing some things just a little better, some not really. Is that ok?

Is there anything in QM to support or disprove such a notion? I remember hearing about particles "coming in and out of existence". Is that really a thing?

He now, in this immediate moment, sees his activity and himself not as innocent. The Other changes how he sees himself. Whether the other is real or not; whether it's just a rat or an actual person behind him, is unimportant - for the most part. The Other is not differentiated or identified on the basis of whether it exists. What matters more is its influence on the self.
imo the above concept can be perceived in extreme absence of the Other. i have dreamed that everyone is fooled into using their brain sub-optimally, that the true path to enlightenment is actually sitting on a rock for 20 adult years with your fist under your chin and eyes closed....a brain hatches like an egg in lieu of death!

one might never know with such unfortunate distractions.

There's some pretty solid evidence of the deleterious effects of loneliness. Barring that, who knows, you may be right.

Re: Random dude on Reddit solves hard problem of conciousness

I just read a survey of experiment that suggested people with “high empathy” sense experience music in a way where the brain scans suggest it is like they are with the musicians, presently. I enjoy that we can empathize with musicians connected by light beams and ear-tools. Is that some consciousness? Is that seeing some of what consciousness does?
