Optimal Shipping Algorithm

I'm no expert at mathematics but I've been mulling over a problem that I wonder has been solved, or is solvable?

Let's say you have a standard large shipping box, 24"x24"x18", and various smaller dimensions/weights that need to fit in x number of boxes. You want to find the optimal packing arrangements that minimize the # of boxes used and the weight of each box (which let's assume has a maximum allowable).

What math would you use to determine this? If not strictly solvable (I'm assuming this is a computation that has an extreme number of solutions), is there a heuristic we could use to get to a nearly optimal number?

Thanks for your input
