Cassini's twenty year saga exploring Saturn to end on September 15................

Daring exploration

Cassini's Grand Finale is about so much more than the spacecraft's final dive into Saturn. That dramatic event is the capstone of six months of daring exploration and scientific discovery. (And those six months are the thrilling final chapter in a historic 20-year journey.)

At times, the spacecraft will skirt the very inner edge of the rings; at other times, it will skim the outer edges of the atmosphere. While the mission team is confident the risks are well understood, there could still be surprises. It's the kind of bold adventure that could only be undertaken at the end of the mission.

Humans will be the old way for intelligence, we will be exclusive and retro, while the real deal will be AI. If we can get natural deaths and a comfortable life before that, then it'll be ok.

"Negative Mass", observed by drunk, brain-dead physicists. I think this is much ado about less than nothing. The press just trying to amp up readership numbers. The Bose-Einstein condensate has been know since the equations were inscribed on the tablets Moses brought down from Mt. Sinai. I'm sure Masque will correct me if I'm misrepresenting something.

From above link:

Europe selects grand gravity mission. It is set to be one of the major science projects of the 2030s.

The European Space Agency has just given the green light to the LISA mission to detect gravitational waves.

This will see lasers bounced between three identical satellites separated by 2.5 million km.

By looking for tiny perturbations in these light beams, the trio hope to catch the warping of space-time that is generated by cataclysmic events such as the merger of gargantuan black holes.

Ground-based laboratories in the US have recently begun detecting gravitational waves from coalescing objects that are 20-30 times the mass of our Sun.

But by sending an observatory into space, scientists would expect to discover sources that are millions of times bigger still and to sense their activity all the way out to the edge of the observable Universe.

bbc.com/news/science

From above link:

Prof Stephen Hawking has called for leading nations to send astronauts to the Moon by 2020.

They should also aim to build a lunar base in 30 years' time and send people to Mars by 2025.

Prof Hawking said that the goal would re-ignite the space programme, forge new alliances and give humanity a sense of purpose.

He was speaking at the Starmus Festival celebrating science and the arts, which is being held in Trondheim, Norway.

"Spreading out into space will completely change the future of humanity," he said.

"I hope it would unite competitive nations in a single goal, to face the common challenge for us all.

"A new and ambitious space programme would excite (young people), and stimulate interest in other areas, such as astrophysics and cosmology".

*********************************

Yes, well I've been harping on getting to the Moon to establish my Bar and Brothel and Poker Emporium for years. That this Hawking dimwit is finally getting on board is useful because he is famous, yet he still has a low field of vision and mixes in sickening morals where they are nothing but an impediment.

Anyway, Ceres should also be established as a drug and arms factory base of operations for the expansion of the best of humanity. Science and technology expands best when on a war/empire building venture. Mars is also useful as a base of supply and resupply for expansion and empire building. Build it and offer opportunity and the throbbing masses will follow.

Gif and image written into the DNA of bacteria

bbc/news/science-environment

Below is the abstract of the original paper:[acquired through link in above webpage]

DNA is an excellent medium for archiving data. Recent efforts
have illustrated the potential for information storage in DNA
using synthesized oligonucleotides assembled in vitro
relatively unexplored avenue of information storage in DNA is
the ability to write information into the genome of a living cell
by the addition of nucleotides over time. Using the Cas1–Cas2
integrase, the CRISPR–Cas microbial immune system stores
the nucleotide content of invading viruses to confer adaptive
immunity. When harnessed, this system has the potential to
write arbitrary information into the genome.

Here we use the CRISPR–Cas system to encode the pixel values of black and white
images and a short movie into the genomes of a population of
living bacteria. In doing so, we push the technical limits of this
information storage system and optimize strategies to minimize
those limitations. We also uncover underlying principles of the
CRISPR–Cas adaptation system, including sequence determinants
of spacer acquisition that are relevant for understanding both
the basic biology of bacterial adaptation and its technological
applications. This work demonstrates that this system can capture
and stably store practical amounts of real data within the genomes
of populations of living cells.

Re: Official SMP News Articles Thread

I recently read this article in Scientific American at a friend’s home, about how conspiracy theories spread online – link is just to the abstract.

http://www.nature.com/scientificamer...an0417-60.html

Interesting excerpts from the full article: [my bold]
There is another major difference between science new and conspiracy theories. Whether true or not, science news belongs to a tradition of rational thinking based on empirical evidence. Conspiracy thinking, on the other hand, arises when people find themselves unable to determine simple causes for complex, adverse circumstances. The very complexity of issues such as multiculturalism, the growing intricacy of the global financial system and technological progress can lead people, regardless of education level, to choose to believe compact explanations that clearly identify an object of blame. Martin Bauer, a social psychologist at the London School of Economics and a scholar of conspiracy dynamics, describes conspiracy thinking as a “quasireligious mentality.” It is a little bit like the dawn of humanity, when people attributed divinity to storms. ……………………

The division of social networks into homogeneous groups is crucial to understanding the viral nature of the phenomena. These groups tend to exclude anything that does not fit with their worldview. ………

These dynamics suggest that the spread of online misinformation will be very hard to stop. Any attempt at reasoned discussion usually degenerates into a fight between extremists, which ends in polarization. In this context, it is quite difficult to accurately inform people and almost impossible to stop a baseless report.

In all probability, social media will continue to teem with debates on the latest global mega conspiracy. The important thing is to share what is being hidden from us; whether it is true of false hardly matters. Perhaps we should stop calling this the Information Age and start calling it the Age of Credulity.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Anyone that has tried to honestly debate conspiracy type postings on the internet (I've done it some) will recognize the truth of the above. Also note that I gave up on dealing with Conspiracy types.

It's a lot like telling scientists and science-lovers that most of what science produces is trash, and not different in reliability to a "cool story bro" from a guy down the pub. They get all uppity and emotional and defend their clan. It's not a phenomenon limited to conspiracy theorists or religion, it exists everywhere.

It's why I enjoy talking to morons. I learn about the flaws in myself when I do. Don't be so quick to give up on them, Zeno. There's nothing more interesting a pure example of the flaws you yourself have.

But I have no flaws. Also, I chucked emotionalisms long ago. But they are a useful display mechanism - like peacock feathers, and evolved for a reason. Scientists figured that out. God just sat on the sideline, drinking a whiskey sour and smacking his lips. That's why God is redundant. Still useful of course, but redundant. Nietzsche wanted him replaced. Not a bad idea so I've applied for the job. My resume went to an address on Ceres. I'll certainly let you guys know the outcome*.

* I already knew the answer before I sent the resume out. I'm just being civil and polite.

Update on Juno and the new close up images of Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Or Areola if you prefer.

juno-spots-great-red-spot

From above link:

Images of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot reveal a tangle of dark, veinous clouds weaving their way through a massive crimson oval. The JunoCam imager aboard NASA's Juno mission snapped pics of the most iconic feature of the solar system’s largest planetary inhabitant during its Monday (July 10) flyby. The images of the Great Red Spot were downlinked from the spacecraft’s memory on Tuesday and placed on the mission’s JunoCam website Wednesday morning.

“For hundreds of years scientists have been observing, wondering and theorizing about Jupiter’s Great Red Spot,” said Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. “Now we have the best pictures ever of this iconic storm. It will take us some time to analyze all the data from not only JunoCam, but Juno’s eight science instruments, to shed some new light on the past, present and future of the Great Red Spot.”

Imagine the day they are in formation in all lanes driving at speed limit or less forcing everyone to follow hahaha. Or the day some hacker makes that possible.

Re: Official SMP News Articles Thread

I've posted about this before, whether here or other thread(s) does not matter.

First tanker crosses northern sea route without ice breaker

news/science-environment

Some things to note:

This is a Russian Venture.

The Article Title is misleading in a sense. True, the Tanker did not need an ice-breaker escort ship, but the tanker itself is a light-weight ice breaker, capable of going through Sea Ice more that 6 ft thick.

***********

From above link:

The specially-built ship completed the crossing in just six-and-a-half days setting a new record, according to the tanker's Russian owners.

The 300-metre-long Sovcomflot ship, the Christophe de Margerie, was carrying gas from Norway to South Korea.

Rising Arctic temperatures are boosting commercial shipping across this route.

The Christophe de Margerie is the world's first and, at present, only ice-breaking LNG carrier.

On its maiden voyage earlier this year, the Christophe de Margerie docked in the Russian port of Sabetta. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the crew and energy company officials gathered on the ship's bridge, saying: "This is a big event in the opening up of the Arctic."

The Russian owners, Sovcomflot, will use this ice-breaking tanker to export gas from the Yamal peninsula to Asian markets later this year.

It will be the first of a planned fleet of 15 that will transport gas from these ice bound fields all year round.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

My main man Putin charging ahead again.

Re: Official SMP News Articles Thread

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/resea...170000688.html

The ITER tokamak will be ten times larger than the largest existing such device, capable, as per plans, to produce 500 MW of fusion power. To compare, the record so far, set by European tokamak JET (the largest existing one), is 16 MW, from input of 24 MW. The goal of the ITER team is to produce these 500 MW from an input of just 50 MW. Recently, a team of researchers from the MIT published a paper that suggests this achievement is realistic.

The MIT team tweaked the “recipe” for nuclear fusion in such a way that the output of power was ten times greater than with the original composition, which consists of 95 percent deuterium ions and 5 percent hydrogen ions, forming plasma heated to incredibly high temperatures in the tokamak from the movement of the ions.

The tokamak produces magnetic fields that keep the superhot plasma inside and keep it moving—and hot—but controlling it for ever-longer periods of time and making it move faster to produce more energy has been a challenge. Now, the MIT scientists may have found the secret ingredient in an isotope of helium, helium-3.

http://www.nature.com/nphys/journal/...tcallback=true

"We describe a new technique for the efficient generation of high-energy ions with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves in multi-ion plasmas. The discussed ‘three-ion’ scenarios are especially suited for strong wave absorption by a very low number of resonant ions. To observe this effect, the plasma composition has to be properly adjusted, as prescribed by theory. We demonstrate the potential of the method on the world-largest plasma magnetic confinement device, JET (Joint European Torus, Culham, UK), and the high-magnetic-field tokamak Alcator C-Mod (Cambridge, USA). The obtained results demonstrate efficient acceleration of 3He ions to high energies in dedicated hydrogen–deuterium mixtures. Simultaneously, effective plasma heating is observed, as a result of the slowing-down of the fast 3He ions. The developed technique is not only limited to laboratory plasmas, but can also be applied to explain observations of energetic ions in space-plasma environments, in particular, 3He-rich solar flares."
