Who can put this in perspective? What are quantum computers going to be doing when I'm an old man?

Fortune.com: Google Claims ‘Quantum Supremacy,’ Marking a Major Milestone in Computing

Quote:
...The claim, made in a new scientific paper, is the most serious indication yet that the promise of quantum computers—an emerging but unproven type of machine—is becoming reality, including their potential to solve formerly ungraspable mathematical problems.

Essentially, Google purports to have pulled off a stunt on a quantum computer that no classical machine—not even the world's most powerful supercomputer—can replicate.

The researchers said they determined that their quantum computer beat regular computers at the task, which involved calculating the output of certain specialized circuits.
What they probably mean is sampling the output distribution of random quantum circuits.

I guess they managed to scale their QC up sufficiently:

They might allow for sentient, human-like androids, capable of safely interacting and working with humans; say, in healthcare. So they might wipe your ass.

A quantum based machine can generate truly random numbers by using quantum phenomena that are entirely unpredictable. Nothing else comes close to that standard. They will be unhackable, for one thing. IDK how they increase computing power/speed but it's in there somewhere.

There are hardware random number generator (HRNG) already. And the speed increase comes from doing things in parallel by keeping the data bits in superposition. That way you basically work on every possible assignment of the bits at once. At least that's how I understand it.

So this proves that a real quantum computer works a lot faster than a regular computer trying to simulate the way a real quantum computer would work?

Google, a business, and as such is in the business of tooting their own horn, and for a whole host of purposes: from amping up their image, to bolstering share price, to attracting the best and brightest people, and to ramp up to the highest degree supposed state-of–the-art research.

The article, as pointed out, is rather superficial, and was released before hard confirmation and/or replication and scientific rigor and scrutiny were applied to the referenced paper. Google wanted to open the door a crack and give a peak, so to invigorate the throbbing masses (see first paragraph). Certainly very useful propaganda.

Google unzipped their pants before they actually had a genuine hard on – almost always an embarrassing mistake.

I can personally generate truly random numbers that are entirely unpredictable. In fact I can do so and also cheat at the same time, a precisely coded computer couldn't do that. Unless it was programmed to do so. My free will supersedes anything a standard computer, a quantum computer or any other mechanical chimera can accomplish.

A quantum computer could never originate the Book of Revelations. I could do it in 24 hrs using only pen, paper, and sixteen bottles of Gin.

Progress is an opioid that seduces the majority of the throbbing masses. Try to avoid that ceaseless whirlpool of idiocy, Howard. It leads nowhere. As your sex robot example is an excellent point. Of course you could have a sexbot that never talks - a marked improvement on all women.

No, this is known already. They claim that they built a quantum computer with a capacity (in qbits) that makes it unfeasible to be simulated with today's supercomputers, because it would take, say, several thousand years.

Not necessarily (the unzipping part). Don't forget that the general public, probably including the writers of a site called "fortune.com", don't even know how today's computers work, let alone quantum computers; so consequently the reporting is dumbed down. Could still be legit imo.

BTM misses the mark as usual. Virtual reality* and direct human interfaces is the emerging technology.

This tech will be used for sex and ordering pizza. One day even the pleasure of eating pizza** man be reproduced while eating some tasteless healthy thing.

The future will be awesome. bastards!

* by 'virtual reality' I of course just mean 'reality'
** and obviously using pizza as a proxy for decent food

Ah! Possibly, but remote. You wouldn't bet any substantial amount on it unless given massive odds.

One of my son's professors is currently working on something or other with using brain waves to control stuff. No pizza or porn though.

You bring up a very interesting topic here. This topic came up in an Alan Watt's talk I was listening to recently. It was on the subject of power. And how much power one truly wants. It was brilliant. He basically argued that no one really wants power if they are sensible, even though they think that they do. It was on a deeper level, pertaining to Hinduism, where in that belief system, according to him that we are all God in disguise. But sex dolls were brought up to illustrate the point.

The truth is, we do want something that surprises us, not something that gives in to our every desire; and so why would anyone not pretend to not be God, if they were indeed, God. An inflatable doll to ****, is not interesting obviously. Then just add layers from an inanimate object to what we are actually looking for, and you will come to the conclusion that a bithc is exactly what we would propose.

And a good surprise, must imply a bad surprise. As you can't have one without the other.

But it's great at the beginning and when you get tired you start a fresh program, change a few features etc. No divorce, no murder sentence, no alimony, no kids, no mother in law (unless you're rimmer).

Until we start the fight for robot rights of course. Robots are people too.

You'll be erasing and starting over until you conclude that the best program is the one we have. But yes, if you happen to have to get into a divorce or murder trial, it would be nice to have the option to start over. Or would it. You have to choose one reality, if you are God, so pick one.

quantum computing is like any other quantum-premised thing you hear about -- bullshit hype that never amounts to anything other than its own self-fueled news stories.
