I guess if they suppose it is, that's what they suppose.
I do know exploring the ideas about simulating can lead to further ideas, insights and conclusions about "far out" stuff like perception. And, we already know simulation is quite reasonable to do and for purpose . We already do it.
So "far out", "far in", and "fiction" all fall in range of the category "simulating" at some points.
