And in this instance I define God as "That which existed before the big bang"

A funny quirk about humanity is people are able to conceptualize the time before there was time.

Where are we at with spacetime theory; can time exist without space? If there is no time, can there be a before?

i don't think anyone can conceptualize the time before time because it is a silly statement without any meaning. that is like saying "name a whole number less than 3 that equals 3"

time as well as space began as we know then at the big bang. as far as we know there is no such thing as time before the big bang, so saying "before" the big bang is a meaningless statement.

Clearly yes, I'm a closet theist after all.

If there is no before the big bang, is it fair to say the big bang always existed?

i mean, did you read what i just said? the phrase "before the big bang" physically has no meaning as far as we know.

and to stu you can say the big bang has "always" existed since always is a measurement of time, but it is a fairly trivial statement because you are essentially saying "time has existed for as long as time has existed". you need to stop thinking about everything relative to time, we don't know what exists outside of our universe, that is the question you are asking and it as of yet has not been answered.

Of ****ing course not. Science has a reputation for uncovering unkowns. Is it that outrageous to think that some day we might know what was "before" the big bang? If so, then you just keep moving the goal post back to another "before"

Your questions should be, do you see god as the first cause, to which i still answer no.

but besides that, let's just concentrate on before the big bang

Strange definition.

I haven’t the foggiest what if anything existed before the big bang. My guess is the question is meaningless but I cannot say I actually believe anything – can I have my no vote back I want to abstain.

by that definition there should be no "no" answers. therefore, my answer is "yes"

The OP is asking "Do you believe something for which existence does not apply existed in a time that can never be in a state that can never be shown?"

So it doesn't really matter what you answer.

No, they arent. They are merely INCAPABLE of conceptualizing that there is no such thing as before time.

Really? In 30 minutes I want you to posit some creature that is entirely a figment of your imagination, and that has never been described in either words or text ever in the history of man. Use as many details as you feel necessary to ensure that I could have never heard of it before or ever even considered it in my mind.

While you are working on that, I'm going to spend the next 30 minutes not believing in that thing.

How could anyone possibly know the answer to this? Are you just being stupid, or what?

That's the point of the question. If you would classify the universe as a supreme conscious entity and classify "God" as either this consciousness, a part of it, or external to this entity, then only the universe (or God) would know the answer, unless some form of life came into sudden being and got the memo shortly thereafter.

if i understand the question right, he's stating that "god" is "anything that has existed before the big bang". so....idk?
