What is causing a rock rolling down a hill to continue rolling down the hill? You can cite the kinetic energy of the rock and the gravitational potential energy. This is what the Hamiltonian encompasses, on one side of Schrodinger's equation.

Why complex values? A lot of ink has been spilled, but all we really know is that we definitely need them. I wouldn't get too hung up on that, just see it as a mathematical device needed to make the equations fit reality.
