I bet everything is in the painting including the side observer and the art gallery/museum look on the sides and he is the guy coming out of the painting and possibly also the one watching and the one painting down as well lol. I mean thats what i would do for fun but i would use images of myself from different ages to mock it even further.

We should really start producing our own art and make millions at it by the way why not. It really is all about concept and IQ games.

All about perspective. I love ones like this too.

The guy looking can be easily himself though. Plus i would have gone one step further and make the museum or gallery background realistically fake too.

This painting is creating controversy.

My 2 cents: If an artist has managed to get a painting onto a wall at the Met then leave it there w/o some stupid plaque.

From the article you linked:

'But Christian Viveros-Fauné, a New York-based Chilean art critic, went further, writing in The Village Voice in the same year that Balthus was “painting’s most memorable crotch-shot man”.

In a piece entitled "Ol' Dirty Master," he wrote: “The original upskirt artist, Balthus devoted a career to obsessively depicting female pubescent sexuality. Today, there is no question that Balthus was a paedophile.”'

I can understand the backlash, given the mores of 2017. Deference to 'managing to get a painting onto a wall at the Met' sounds like a blind appeal to the authority of that institution, if you ask me.

Some great images in this thread, btw.

You are absolutely correct. I am trusting, not unreasonably, that The Met knows what it's doing.

Is this a good place to tell the short story of the time I tried to explain to an upset five year old that art is never perfect? It didn't go well.
