facebook always carried a satanic vibe to me. twitter is totally bat****, but there are posts worth checking out every now and then.

At present I plan to be last out of Facebook. “No one gets left behind”. But I also challenge and confront Facebook about Facebook on Facebook- so they may get rid of me for calling them prudes and using “psychometrics” back on them. 🤣🤣any here banned themselves from all social media?

I never used twitter. Probably won’t. So I guess I am pre-banned from twitter.

It makes no sense to me to voluntarily limit the amount of characters I may use.

The main reason I'm thinking of banning or limiting social media is just the urge to click on Twitter and other websites while working/studying. I did a week ban and got so much done but meh just went back to old ways multi clicking Twitter/websites and getting less work/study done.

The thing is, there's a lot to learn from Following some on Twitter, and reading good websites, but its additive, meh.

The best approach is to have never joined them to begin with. The second best is to have joined them with aliases. Now that they want real names and they have made their intention clear conveniently assisted by the trolls they themselves enabled, all they will get in a confident, defiant middle finger up their world control prospects.

Stay free my friend.

Highly convenient to join all accounts, web activities, emails, driving records and location in all devices? Exactly at what point did one authorize any of this?

Either they become your friend in crystal clear ways or scientific society underground is their enemy.

I watched a Vox YouTube about disrupting the supposed device addiction. Stuff like change to grayscale colors and turn off notices that aren’t from humans.

But, the suggestion that devices are addictive is partially sourced from the very tech people who make them, and scary suggestions can be addictive and appealing so...addiction is something that appears worth understanding well yourself if it’s a concern.

As an aside, Facebook is way over their head in their foolish attempts at social engineering. Is attempting to do social engineering addictive?

I've enforced a social-media ban on myself for the past 5 years, but I'm beginning to feel it crumble recently. FB is the de facto method of communication in my social circles, and not having it is logistically challenging.

"Choose life" was a well-meaning slogan from a 1980s anti-drug campaign. And we used to add things to it. So I might say, for example, choose... Designer lingerie in the vain hope of kicking some life back into a dead relationship. Choose handbags. Choose high-heeled shoes. Cashmere and silk to make yourself feel what passes for happy. Choose an iPhone made in China by a woman who jumped out of a window, and stick it in the pocket of your jacket fresh from a South Asian firetrap. Choose Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and a thousand other ways to spew your bile across people you've never met. Choose updating your profile. Tell the world what you had for breakfast and hope that someone, somewhere cares. Choose looking up old flames, desperate to believe that you don't look as bad as they do. Choose live-blogging from your first wank to your last breath. Human interaction reduced to nothing more than data. Choose ten things you never knew about celebrities who'd had surgery. Choose screaming about abortion. Choose rape jokes, slut shaming, revenge porn, and an endless tide of depressing misogyny. Choose 9/11 never happened, and if it did, it was the Jews. Choose a zero-hour contract and a two-hour journey to work, and choose the same for your kids, only worse. And maybe tell yourself it's better that they never happened. And then sit back and smother the pain with an unknown dose of an unknown drug made in somebody's ****ing kitchen. Choose unfulfilled promise and wishing you'd done it all differently. Choose never learning from your own mistakes. Choose watching history repeat itself. Choose the slow reconciliation towards what you can get rather than what you always hoped for. Settle for less and keep a brave face on it. Choose disappointment. And choose losing the ones you loved. And as they fall from view, a piece of you dies with them. Until you can see that one day in the future, piece by piece, they will all be gone. And there'll be nothing left of you to call alive or dead. Choose your future, Veronika. Choose life.

Facebook profiles are generally a curated avatar of your ideal self. Carl Rogers would have been fascinated. Everything from taking ten selfies only to upload the one you like the best to everything you post. It's how you would like others to see you, knowing everyone from your colleagues to your extended family could possibly see and judge. Is that the fault of Facebook though?

Is even the swiping down inbuilt mechanism that is based on the design of a slot machine for addictive purposes the fault of Facebook?

There are exceptions, as per usual. That's not even barely scratching the surface of human psychology. The conversation could turn political too if you want, such as a private company using your data for financial gain while the main contributors don't get a kickback. See Jaron Larnier.

Twitter is different because you can choose to be anonymous more freely.

Forums are different. Seeing as we have anonymity. A precursor.

The future of privacy is what exactly.

My favorite question of 2018 is “Do you remember the moment you decided to become a product?”

It never happened is my answer. It’s nonsensical to attempt to remember what did not happen. One may even describe it as knowing a complete remembrance which doesn’t contain making that decision at all.

Now does anyone remember the first time they were told they were a product? That happened. I suppose I can attempt to remember that.

I don't know anyone IRL so I don't need any social media accounts. I do have like 4 fake facebook accounts but I haven't used them in a long time.

I enjoy your writing. Partly because it reminds me of and maybe borrows from Chuck Palahniuk; partly because it's insightful and partly because, at times, it appears intentionally paradoxical.

Scaring parents with narratives about scary addictions, video device influences, and probable strangers is a niche media industry, but is lagging behind on it’s own continuing education and fails at basics.

It’s curious. This is social media.
When I was a child they were called BBS, but they said don’t sit too close to the television. Before I was born listening to rock and rock would make people fornicate. Sticks and stones are useable like anti-social devices. When do we research addiction to that?
