1. Rodgers
2. Rivers
3. Cam
4. Stafford
5. Brady
6. Brees
7. Luck
8. Roethlisberger
9. Vick
10. Ryan
11. Romo
12. Schaub
13. Cutler
14. Peyton
15. RG3
16. Flacco
17. Freeman
18. Locker
19. Dalton
20. Flynn
21. Young
22. Smith
23. Tebow
24. Eli
25. Fitzpatrick
26. Kolb
27. Moore
28. Bradford
29. Ponder

He was 7th in the league in QB rating and 5th in ANY/A last year which was the first time in his career he was Top 10 in either category. At the age of 31. Obviously, I wouldn't rank him this low for next season only, but given his age, I don't think he's a Top 20 QB asset, no. However, that discussion's already been done to death when they did the draft here. For now, let's just focus on the fact that Sanchez clearly doesn't belong ahead of anyone on that list. Can we all agree on that?

Sanchez is simply evidence of the desire, of a higher power. There is no reason to give this man 20M guaranteed...unless you are trying to diversify the gene pool. NFL Network did a study, concluding that people prefer the most symmetric faced people. Sanchez was in the top 10. The first non white/black starting QB, for an NY team nonetheless; with the amount of advertised money, most women don't give a **** if he's winning or not

He is a unique genetic specimen, combined with a moderate degree of physical prowess. The higher power wants him to diversify the gene pool.

Its the only reason you would handcuff yourself for 2 more years instead of 1 for 20M guaranteed. Its not possible for there to be another reason. Its evolution.

Are you arguing they're better than Sanchez to build a franchise around or is it just the Eli thing? Really don't wanna do the Eli argument again. You can read the whole argument in this thread: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/46...hread-1157713/. Although, to be fair, VY's last season as a starter was better than any season of Eli's career. He's 3 years younger too.

I like this post a lot. Really about the only reason that makes sense for this deal. He looks like a QB. Is great with the NY media. Fan friendly. Still though, they're really pushing it to make this huge commitment just hoping he'll get better. I mean it's not like anyone else was gonna sign him to start when his deal ran out. Why don't they just keep him as cheaply as possible, and then try to bring some talent around him? I guess it kinda makes sense if they figure they'll just keep a pretty face out there while they tank for future drafts where they can get a real franchise QB. Dunno if they can make Barkley, but maybe there will be someone good in 2014?

Yes, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will earn $20.5 million in guaranteed money in 2012 and 2013 as part of his new contract. The fact, however, that Sanchez already was due to earn $17.75 million over the next two seasons has prompted one league source to characterize the move as a “lipstick and powder” deal.

For an extra $2.75 million, Sanchez gave the Jets three straight option years, allowing the team to keep him if he finally realizes his full potential — and to cut him without further investment after the 2013 season, the 2014 season, or the 2015 season.
Hmm, it seems a little misleading since the article also indicates he could have been cut this offseason and the Jets would only have owed him $6 million. But I guess if they weren't planning to cut him, this move won't cost them that much.

Assuming they were out of contention for Peyton I don't think the extension was that bad. It's not so much money to rule out signing a Jason Campbell or Leftwich to come in and compete. And it also doesn't preclude them from drafting a QB they like in any round at any time. They can bounce or Sanchez after 2 seasons, and if he can get to league average level they might even get something in trade value.

Beyond the mild 2-year commitment it's a glorified restructuring and this year looks like it was a given anyway. They apparently didn't want/couldn't get Manning, weren't interested in Flynn, and have no viable options to draft a starter this year.

It's a poor man's version of Mike Vick's deal.

PS here are the terms:

Another $10 million is available through escalators. Sanchez is eligible for annual $500,000 workout bonuses throughout the contract's life. 2012: $3.25 million, 2013: $8.25 million, 2014: $9 million (+ $2 million roster bonus due in late March), 2015: $12.5 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due in late March), 2016: $10.75 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due in late March), 2017: Free Agent
Last 3 years are effectively (if not literally) voidable.

The upside here for the Jets is that they open up a little extra cap space this year, aren't paying through the nose next year, and they also have 3 cheap option years if Sanchez gets any better.

Downside is you can no longer cut him today and save $12m in cap space like you could have yesterday. Also you potentially wind up with him as someone's backup and costing you $10.3m in 2013. But that's just not a lot for QBs now + the cap is expected to shoot way up that year + rookies are cheaper now besides. And it's a small charge to let him go after that.

They probably felt Sanchez was their best available option this season and still see some possibility for improvement. If correct then it's a good to great deal. If they're wrong than it would hardly be a franchise-crippling mistake with years of cap hell.

Here is a ridiculous list I post in every thread where I rank 22 QBs above Eli.
