The opening ceremony has come and gone, time for a thread. The hockey and Curling tournaments already have dedicated ones. But there are a load of other fun sports there for discussing, and let us continue the old tradition of watching sports every four years and talking out of aur asses like we're experts.

Time zone obviously sucks but I hear everything's tape delayed in Murica#1 anyway.

Anyway, let's get to the some of sports

Alpine skiing

The pinnacle of this, the men's downhill, takes place saturday 9 pm Eastern time. Great for the North Americans, bad for the Euros. But there's countless different ways to tumble down a hill on skis, so we'll be covered.

Speed skating

Bizarrely has been dominated by the dutch. Another sports that gives out a million gold medals for various different distances.

Cross country skiing

Boring af but a quintessential part of the winter olympics

Sky jumping

a wonderfully silly sport.

Figure skating

Questionable if any iron rods will be involved.

Biathlon

Really hoping for some german medals here. As the old saying goes: "That's what Germans do- shoot and run for the woods".

Snowboard

they went with the times a few years back and added a whole bunch of snowboard events. Pictured is my favourite event at the Olympics, snowboard cross. Crashes guaranteed.

Throwing yourself down a bob track in many different ways

Including crazy people who go head first

Throwback to the 2002 men's 1000m race:

ok so apparently these are the medals (shamelessly stolen from the hockey thread)

Pretty solid. Among the games I've followed I'd rate them mid table, top two are cleary 2010 and 2014

1. Vancouver

2. Sochi

3. these

4. Torino

and the absolute WOAT, SLC

imo Sochi > Pyeongchang > Vancouver >> Donut medals >>>>>>> SLC (holy **** these are ugly)

I just saw another pic of the Vancouver medals and they seem to be round and not weirdly deformed there:

Medals being wavy is a feature, not a bug imo. Not if it was always the case but for that one instance I liked it.

Those Torino CD medals are hideous
Probably why Canada didn't bother dominating hockey that year

But on the other hand, this slopestyle snowboarding just looks amazing always
Could watch this all day

Not empty. The lights are just a little above people sitting.

Is it normal for this many snowboard runs to wipeout?

Considering the country he's from the standards for qualifying probably consist of just showing up to the event.

Fourcade vs Boe in Biathlon is going to produce some GOAT olympic moments

Both are in their absolute prime

I apologize to any american female figure skaters going for the top prize, but I'll be desperately rooting for Yuna Kim to not choke and take the gold in female solo figure skating. She won gold in 2010 and silver in 2014 and is a national hero here.

men's 1500 heats are on now. Short track speed skating is probably my favorite Olympic event. Snowboard cross and downhill are awesome as well.

Also, cross country skiing looks absolutely miserably exhausting.

Bout to be 9 skaters in the men's 1500 short track final. This has potential to be epic.

9 skaters the 1500m final. Would be shocked if they go 5 laps without crashing.

My pony is definitely slower than those 9 guys.
