GC midfield options are large in number at this point. In the 4-2-3-1 is there any way Bradley plays a little more forward and it morphs into something like a 4-1-4-1 or 4-1-3-2 depending on what BB does with Dempsey? It doesn't make a lot of sense tactically imo since Bradley likes to get forward so much. Jones/Edu as 2 in front of the back 4 still makes more sense. I guess 4-1-4-1 with Jones acting as anchor and MB and Holden together in mid could work... but they both get forward so much it seems like they're asking for trouble on the counter. Especially against quick striking central American teams. I guess the MB, Dempsey, Donovan work rate could hep ameliorate this issue. Not sure. We could see some 4-2 matches this summer imo.

It just looks like either MB or Holden is going to be seeing a lot of bench at GC and though the depth is nice, I'm afraid Holden, who has probably been the most consistent Euro-based Nat this year along with Dempsey, isn't going to play a whole lot.
GC starting midield+forwards imo.

----------Joze------------
Landon----------Dempsey
---------Holden----------
----Bradley---Edu--------

I have no idea why you think Edu and Jones would both be in the same midfield together. Bradley and Edu played together often and Holden is more than comfortable as a CM. He's been playing great at Bolton too. With the personnel we have, a 433 or 4231 hybrid is totally possible, or even having Dempsey move up top and sliding Holden out to the right.

That, imo, is what our midfield and forwards will be at this summers GC.

Yeah I agree with that rough sketch TSC.

It's good in that there's a lot of versatility as well. Dempsey, Donovan, and Holden can all play in a more central attacking role or out wide (or start from wide but drift central a lot etc.).

It's also pretty cool that our 3 across the midfield in a 4-2-3-1 are all proven quality players in the EPL. In another cycle or two we'll be able to say that about the entire starting 11 I should think.

I'm fine with any two of Bradley, Jones, and Edu in front of the back four (unless Edu is needed at CB).

Make the decision in the summer based on form and fitness and how they look in camp. Or rotate them during the tournament in the group stages to keep them fresh or until you see which combo works the best.

There's a serious lack of a frat boy goalscoring midfielder in there TSC, back to the drawing board.

:P

We've been hoping for that formation for what, 3 years now? We haven't gotten that formation to work for us yet for some unknown reason. I think the flexibility of MB, LD, CD and SH is the biggest reason all of them should be on the field if at all possible.

Yeah obviously it depends a lot on how adventurous BB feels since he loves his 442, but imo we can play what was posted above and we should. The one change may be Buddle for Joze just based on form and who has actually been playing games.

Hoopie, good point, maybe he can be a super sub though?

I was thinking a roaming number 10, given a free role to dictate play and score devastating goals arriving late into the box. His recent haircut proves that he's serious.

Per Ives Spector has been playing well recently as an Attacking CM and Clark has been doing well as a CB.

American midfielder Freddy Adu's long and winding path through Europe has taken him to Turkey.

According to Richard Motzkin, his agent, Adu is set to move to Turkish second division club Rizespor on loan. Portuguese club Benfica, which bought Adu from Real Salt Lake in 2007, still owns Adu's contract.

The move to Turkey is the latest in a saga that has seen the former youth national team star and one-time U.S. national team midfielder go from Portugal to France to Greece and now to Turkey after trials in Denmark and Germany failed to produce moves.

He's not giving up 7 figure paychecks until that contract runs out.

Jozy scoops the media, announcing his loan move to Bursaspor (Turkish champions) on Twitter minutes ago.

I guess he'll match up against Freddy at some point?

CONCACAF gets 4 spots in 2014.

Doesn't matter for your lot, but it does have an impact on the qualification process and the # of games (I imagine they won't do the final crossover after the 2 groups of 4 now)

First of all, wow. I was hoping for 3.5 with a playoff vs AFC. I don't think CONCACAF deserves more than 3.5 and I honestly wouldn't complain with 3.

Second of all, this crushes the infinitely small possibility of US v Mexico in the 3rd place match which means the US and Mexico WILL NOT PLAY during CONCACAF qualification. Gah, I never got to see US @ Azteca and I was definitely planning on going next time. Maybe Gold Cup will be held in Mexico again in the future?
