No, he's behind a long list of players - next up will be Anthony Edgar, who is Jermaine Defoe's cousin. Stranger things have happened though. I really have no idea if he is any good or not.

There is one only a couple of miles from the ground, er, so I'm told. It'll be about the only thing associated with West Ham United that has a happy ending at the moment.

Re: US Men's National Soccer Team Thread: 2011 and Beyond

They announced the U-17 residency roster yesterday. Here are the 40 players going to Bradenton.

GOALKEEPERS (4)
Wade Hamilton (Arsenal FC; Murietta, Calif.)
Jake McGuire (Chivas USA; Chino, Calif.)
Kendall McIntosh (Mustang Academy; Santa Rosa, Calif.)
Fernando Pina (Houston Dynamo; Houston, Texas)

DEFENDERS (12)
Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas; Plano, Texas)
Russell Canouse (NY Red Bulls; Lancaster, Pa.)
Mobi Fehr (Tokyo Verdy 1969; Tokyo, Japan)
Trevor Haberkorn (Solar Chelsea Academy; Roanoke, Texas)
Luis Martir (Chivas de Guadalajara; Los Angeles, Calif.)
Alessandro Mion (Kendall SC; Miami, Fla.)
Cole Nagy (Real Salt Lake-AZ; Scottsdale, Ariz.)
Miguel Polley (Derby County Wolves; West Bloomfield, Mich.)
Tarik Salkicic (Strictly Soccer; Pinellas Park, Fla.)
Nathan Smith (Cal Odyssey; Clovis, Calif.)
Andrew Souders (Crew Soccer Academy; Amherst, Ohio)
Danny Zaid (Camp Elite Guatemala; Guatemala City)

MIDFIELDERS (15)
Ricardo Aldape (Lemont Raiders; Chicago Heights, Ill.)
Joe Amon (South Carolina United FC; Summerville, S.C.)
Marco Delgado (Cosmo Academy West; Glendora, Calif.)
Ruben Duran (Las Vegas Premier; Las Vegas, Nev.)
Patrick Foss (D.C. United; South Riding, Va.)
Alejandro Guido (Aztecs Premier; Chula Vista, Calif.)
Jared Hegardt (Notts Forest FC; San Diego, Calif.)
Ryan Masch (De Anza Force; San Jose, Calif.)
Nico Melo (Florida Rush; Kissimmee, Fla.)
Antonio Murillo (Neusport; Las Vegas, Nev.)
Adam Najem (NY Red Bulls; Clifton, N.J.)
Marc Pelosi (De Anza Force; Sunnyvale, Calif.)
Esteban Rodriguez (Cosmos Academy West; Palmdale, Calif.)
Dillon Serna (Colorado Rapids; Brighton, Colo.)
Colton Storm (HMMS Eagle FC; Mechanicsburg, Pa.)

FORWARDS (9)
Paul Arriola (Arsenal FC; Chula Vista, Calif.)
Kevin De La Torre (Chivas USA; Winchester, Calif.)
Daniel Flores (Cal Odyssey; Fresno, Calif.)
Kellen Gulley (MS Chicago Fire Juniors; Clinton, Miss.)
Edwin Luna (P.A.C. Tigres; San Jose, Calif.)
Alex Muyl (Cosmos Academy East; New York, N.Y.)
Andrew Oliver (Westside United; Indianapolis, Ind.)
Mario Rodriguez (Central Aztecs; North Hollywood, Calif.)
Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C.; CESA)

11 of the 40 players are coming from MLS youth programs. I'm not sure if that's a good thing because it shows that the academies are finding and growing good players or a bad thing because they think they'll do better going to the residency program than staying at home. Either way, it's nice to see so many young kids with experience in the programs of professional teams.

Also here is a Google Map I put together showing where they're all from.
EDIT: lol, okay, I guess no bitly links. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...214.277344&z=3

Blue: Goalies
Green: Defenders
Yellow: Midfielders
Red: Forwards

Its certainly interesting and it can be spun a different ways. It shows that MLS clubs are developing some talent, but it could also be construed to show that the US' youth development is pretty strong outside of MLS.

This is the question everybody's asking, but it sure doesn't seem like there's any other option. Chivas doesn't play anyone but Mexican nationals.

What's his ceiling? A Reyna-type creator in the mid to pair with Bradley in 2014 is possible?

Re: US Men's National Soccer Team Thread: 2011 and Beyond

It's hard to say what his ceiling is, I tend to think it's not as a box-to-box guy and I highly doubt he'll ever reach Reyna heights (at least relatively). Perhaps difficult to imagine him ever as a starter in Bradley's 442 (except, for example, at home against a bad team from CONCACAF in qualifying), but a useful player off the bench or with different formations/tactics.

Re: US Men's National Soccer Team Thread: 2011 and Beyond

I feel that he has the talent to be one of the better US field players in the last 25 years. He's definitely not a box to box guy. With Bradley's tactics/choices, he will never get the time that he deserves. I feel that he is largely wasted. He could be built around as a solid playmaker in the midfield. However, that's not the vision that Bradley has and why the US will continue to be a workman/defensive team.

There's been no real progress with the US team tactics which is why I wish that Bradley was gone.

If Edu can turn into a destroyer, I'd love to see him in the midfield with Bradley and Feilhaber/Holden.

will it happen? I doubt it, Bradley loves his 442.

It does make sense though, as Jozy is pretty much exactly who you want up top in a 4-2-3-1ish type deal. Edu as the destroyer, MB as the DM who joins the attack and makes driving runs forward, and then Holden/Benny in the hole (Holden>Benny imo, but Holden is also more valuable on the flanks).

Re: US Men's National Soccer Team Thread: 2011 and Beyond

stak, my only real concern with running a 4231 with the current US set up is how best to get goals. Deuce and Landon coming from a bit deeper in that set up would work, but I would almost feel that jozy would hold things up a bit too much and he doesn't score enough to work it fully

something does have to change from the empty bucket though. It allows us to be very workman like and defensive, but it also stymies the team a bit. I think a 433 with wide upfront wingers (both landon and deuce) would possibly play best

Play Guzan imo, he needs the games and experience. We would be ****ed otherwise if Howard for some reason gets injured. I'd love to see as many new faces as possible including Jones so that he can pwn in next summers Gold Cup.

Re: US Men's National Soccer Team Thread: 2011 and Beyond

Odd that no players based in Mexico got called up. Hmm, would've been nice to see Torres again.

Other folk I'd kinda like to see:

Hunter Freeman - Defender who MLS fans may remember. Plays with Clarence Goodson at IK Start now and is a pretty consistent starter. Only 25, may be a good piece for us with such an aging defense.

Justin Braun - Chivas USA forward. A big body, but also brings more on the ball skill than you'd expect from a 6'3" white kid.

And then, as for (non-obvious) people in playoff races
Omar Gonzalez
Kyle Beckerman (dude's been ballin this year)
Robbie Rogers

Tim Ream needs more than 25 games of good showing to get a callup imo. He's no better than Gonzalez was, and he had to put up a season and a half of solid play to get capped. There have been plenty of guys who looked like "THE GUY" during their rookie season only to sputter out to mediocrity.

wow, agree big time with you Tone. Gonzalez needs some call ups and some time with the NT. Big talent. Beckerman probably deserves it as well, but its a bit of a logjam at CM right now.

Not to drudge up a 6 month old argument but, well that's exactly what I'm doing. Less than 2 months until the decision and I found this heartening:

If you haven't read the ESPN piece on Charlie Davies, you need to.

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/new...-espn-magazine

It's tough to describe how hard it was to walk again. Putting pressure on my right leg and believing it would hold me up felt like trusting somebody with your life on a 300-foot cliff. In the fourth week, I moved across the road to the national rehab hospital. With a lot of help, I took my first steps on crutches -- and I broke down and cried. It was the first time I ever saw my dad shed tears.

About five weeks after the accident, I went to Delaware to rehab with trainer James Hashimoto, who had worked with me on the U.S. team. He had me cover 50 feet to the end of the hall and back on crutches. That felt like a marathon -- I was out of breath, exhausted, ready to faint. Every movement hurt because I had to rip up scar tissue.
