it was explained to me that VAR was not available cuz it couldn't be properly installed at some of these 3rd world craphole CONCACAF venues. not sure what's changed since then.

Hopefully CONCACAF draws OFC (New Zealand)

In 2014, Mexico drew NZ in the playoff and won 9-3.

In 2018, Honduras lost to Australia 3-0.

The CONMEBOL team could end up being Colombia (ranked 13th in elo) or Uruguay (ranked 17).

Although if Mexico ends up 4th a playoff series vs. Colombia would be sick.

Weah and Jonathan David started up top for Lille vs. Monaca. They tied 2-2 and David scored both goals in the first 10 min. of the match.

it's just one game fossil, not a series.

the wiki page says the games will be held in Qatar.

Call me cynical but I kind of believe the team that stands to make FIFA the most money at the WC will draw OFC in the playoff. So if USA or Mexico end up 4th I almost guarantee they draw them.

I could be wrong, but I think they hold the draw for the playoff next week, so they won't know who the participants are.

FIFA officially announces that the intercontinental playoffs for the 2022 World Cup will be single-leg matches at a neutral site next June.
Single-leg match for all the marbles, where advancement is mostly down to which team you draw, is horrible.

If only there were a way - this is gonna sound crazy, so just hear me out here - where they could maybe have all 3 teams play against each other? Maybe also at a neutral site? They could even have the final 2 matches played at the same time, to avoid any shenanigans. And then the top two teams out of the four could advance to the next stage? You think FIFA could figure out how to manage a crazy scheme like that?

Good info! I just assumed it was more rigged than otherwise like I consistently believe UEFA playoffs are.

I mean, no one could have predicted they'd stop having games in Toronto because demand for tickets was too big.

On an unrelated side-note: Did they really just put Italy and Portugal in the same draw? So only one team is going to Qatar. That sucks. You know, sometimes you kinda want the fix to be in.

so what's jesse march gonna do now?

shame berhalter's brother is running usmnt or whatever, otherwise maybe he'd be interested in taking that job for a year

Jay Behalter the guy that left USSF in Feb 2020?

Marsch has work to do. He can hone himself as an assistant somewhere and maybe take over after GGG for the 26 cycle but there's no real reason to believe he's any good.

anyone watch enough of rb leipzig to know if they were underwhelming cuz of marsch or for other reasons

I think their attack is still fine, Szobaslai/Silva/Nkunku/Forsberg is a CL attacking bunch doing fine, but they lost maybe the top CB in the league for free so have to score 2 or 3 every game to win. They also rely on pressing and a very up tempo style. Have only seen maybe 3 games this year but I imagine they just don't have the defenders to play that style and be ~2nd in the BL.
