Maybe he shouldn't have assaulted the ref. the more you know
did he touch the ref? i didnt watch the game. i can't see any amount of talking that justifies removing a goal keeper before a penalty 8 minutes after 90'.

I see yellow card material there at most, but thats not a battle Im going to fight itt.

bolded part is irrelevant. I don't know what Buffon said but I'm all for players not being able to verbally abuse refs without consequences, legend or not Players get away with too much pathetic stuff so i'm going to guess it was justified
Not even two Buffons could have stopped that. and I'm a Ronaldo hater. it's still not an excuse for the **** game he had tho
The moment its 11 vs 10 then the pressure of the penalty is much less. Thats the whole point. That is why teams who kick first in PK shootouts win 57% of the time instead of 50% of the time.
Lol at this thread thinking that taking a penalty against Szcensy is the same as taking it against Buffon.

I'm probably forgetting some obvious ones, but other examples of straight reds for verbal abuse?
Anyway, would very prefer the ref show massive amounts of leniency in situations like that, rather than worry about his own delicate sensibilities, which are completely meaningless

correct should've been giving buffon a yellow and then a red if he kept talking **** imo. I bet a yellow would have made him stop and get back to his senses.

yes. pulled him back, then a slight bodycheck. you wont get away with that. Cant find a good quality vid, but one of the replays clearly showed it.

Im not saying Buffon shouldnt have been sent off.
ah right enough. my bad. Although it is kind of hard to argue that it would have been the same spot. obviously it has different implications

in England you wont get away with pulling the referee, let alone going in with your chest for a bump like Buffon did.
Thing is refs have to be calm and reasoned so they can’t generally or instantly relate to emotional reactions in these spots - we all know that getting upset like that never changes the decision, buffon knows this, every player knows this - but emotional states rarely make sense* and these things keep happening and will continue to happen. He wasn’t physically abusive - he’s a passionate man, just give him a yellow imo and whatever he said was heat of the moment stuff and accept a letter of apology in the post.
*more they make sense but in certain spots aren’t considered acceptable behaviour.
