Almost certainly the greatest performance by a thoroughbred in the history of thoroughbred racing. World record dirt track time of 2:24 flat when the next best time since then is 2:25.8 (by Prove Out, who beat Secretariat in the 1973 Woodward by 4 1/2 lengths on an off track). The track record was previously held by Gallant Man, who won the 1957 Belmont Stakes in 2:26.6.
He also broke all 3 track records in his triple crown races (Preakness had to be confirmed later due to clock malfunction).
He would go on to set one more world record in 1973, 1:45.4 for 1 1/8 miles at Belmont Park. He also set the turf course record for 1 1/2 miles @ Belmont, 2:24.8.
A daughter of Secretariat, Trusted Company, is still alive at 34 years of age.
