I'm being pedantic. You said that "no one has come close" to Messi's goal scoring. Well, there's a guy on the team that is the main rival to Messi's team who is scoring at almost the exact same pace.

GOAT is a stupid term imo. To get an idea of a players true 'greatness' you really have to have been around during their career. Stats are all well and good but dont really tell the whole story as there are no stats that we can use for midfielders and defenders. Will they never qualify?

Its doubtful that there are many on this site who witnessed Pele in his pomp and from a personal standpoint I cant really compare Diego and Messi as I was too young to understand the impact of Maradona.

Perhaps greatest player of his generation is a much better consideration. For me, I would still have
1.Zidane
2.Messi
3.Fat Ronaldo as the greatest players in my 'football lifespan'. I think its inevitable that Messi will overtake Zidane but the thread quite rightly has the word 'potentially' in it.
