lolno. For someone to be considered the GOAT in his position they certainly need to score.

The point went over your head.

I was implying that Messi is versatile enough that he could be a CM and not score goals and be considered world-class.

The one thing to say against Messi is that it always seems that when a player is the best in the world, it's always hard to see them dropping off if they haven't had previous injury concerns or to see someone overtaking them if they're still young. We didn't see Kaka falling off so soon, now look at him.

It looks like Messi could win the next 3-4 Ballon D'ors easily. Actually doing so is always hard though. Has to remain healthy, Barca has to keep winning stuff etc.

I think the fact Messi seems squeaky clean goes against him. Maybe if he was a trouble maker and had a flash lifestyle and mad private life then people might rate him higher than they seemingly do.

Calling it a spew wrt taking Messi No2 in a draft just makes me laugh. Give me a break.

So if Messi dies tomorrow you would still consider him the second best player of all time?

if that happened, imo his fame would grow (like a dead pop star) and he would be talked about as the GOAT without question - no dissension allowed.

whether that is true or not is something else.

Quite possibly yes but lets not take that into consideration.

Agreed if this was afterwards.. but seeing as we're predicting how his status will be post career his squeaky clean rep only means he'll probably keep this level of play up for years to come. Maybe then people will say he was a bit boring, but he will still be the best. At some distance.

I've seen Maradonna, fat Ronaldo and Messi play.

I know for sure that Diego is number one, and it's really close for number two. Not only did El Diego take Argentina to a title, he took a mediocre Napoli team to a Serie A title.

Maradonna had the ability to take over a game like no other athlete I have ever seen in any sport.

He is not the greatest of all time, and it is doubtful that he is currently the best player in the world, maybe even on his own team (Iniesta). Top 5 player in the world playing with a bunch of superstars in a system perfectly suited toward their talents can make them look like the GOAT, but appearances can be deceiving.

He wouldn't be able to do either of those things today though.

Replace Messi with prime Maradona for the 2010 WC. Do they beat Spain or Germany? No chance.

pretty sure prime Maradona could do anything, including beating the best of today's Serie A (lol Milan, lol Juve, lol Inter)
